Hi there!
I know a late post this, but reading thru the forum dealing with a different issue and this caught my eye. Have just had to replace the clutch slave/release bearing and Master cylinder in one go, due to something very stupid.. At some point in the last 3.5 yrs I must have topped up the fluid in the reservoir. I can't remember doing it so I'm even leaning towards I've never touched it. After my girl suddenly lost all drive, a long process of troubleshooting that looked mainly at the transfer box led me to the colour of the clutch fluid. It was black-ish and more importantly -smelt of rubber like a new inner-tube. Turns out that any contamination of brake fluid with any petroleum or mineral oil etc etc will slowly start eating away the seals in the system. Very expensive.. And if it happened in the braking system- potentially very dangerous! I learnt the hard way. Luckily only expensive to repair, not the braking system affected!! Anyway I would suggest to you to check the fluid you bled out of the system (what a strange bleed screw huh?!) if you still have it lying around somewhere. Smell it and if it smells fairly strongly ofrubber then you know what happened. If things are running fine I wouldn't worry, but if you even remember that it smelt if rubber, I'd re-bleed again just to wash out any residue. If there is/was no smell I river in the fluid and it was simply dark brown then it was only water and you're fine. Just thought if it helps save someone the head banging I went through... ! Oh, after replacing slave and master on clutch found that the loss of drive has probably been caused by a failed intermediate shaft between transfer box & G Box. Taking T box out tomorrow to check. I'm rambling, sorry. Hope your fluid only had water in it hope you can check to be sure! Cheers! 2011 110 Tdci 1982 Range Rover V8 Classic (Gone) |

Hi flying low ,
Thanks for taking the time to post up your findings I am fairly sure I still have the fluid in the bleed bottle in the garage, I will pop out and have a sniff I can't say I recall any obvious smells , but to be fair after rolling around underneath ,wet and cold , with the wife asking me ,"did you say up ,or down? " every time I asked her to operate the clutch pedal , and with the stupid bleed nipple that may or may not have snapped off every time I twisted it , I mainly didn't take the time to have a sniff Cheers again for the heads up, hope your transfer box doesn't fight you too much. Cheers Nick. "Procrastination is the thief of time" |
