Mine leaked for ages and i couldn't find the source, so out it came, took it apart and reassembled with Hylomar Hydrosil. Result, it still leaked but as I had been able to degrease the box what before looked like it was coming from the input shaft seal was infact coming from two bolts lower down. For some reason I can't explain when they designed the box some of the bolts, One from the front output shaft assembly and one where the box bolts to the gearbox extension are not blind holes. The ends of the bolts sit in the transfer box oil. While I thought that I'd sealed these well enough on assembly I obviously didn't pay enough attention to this area. So out they came again, had to drain the box again which is APITA and treated the bolts with even more Hydrosil and allowed 24 hours for it to cure. So far so good, I don't think the box was over pressurising and the breather was clear so it must have been capillary action drawing oil along the threads. Good luck as it really is a pain in the preverbial. |

Stupid question: where is the breather on the transfer box?

It's on the top of box towards the front, it's held on by a banjo bolt with the tube going to the front near side of the engine bay. It's easier to get at by removing the centre panel of the seat box.

Thank you all, will have a look at the weekend.
Is it a major job to take it off and do all the seals if it's not a blocked breather? Is it worth changing the shaft between the gear and transfer box if it was to come out? Kev |

I got underneath and the breather has been touching something warm at some stage, it's a little distorted with heat. It still works, although restricted.
What's the best options: wading kit; or, just get some hgv air pipe and make your own wading kit? May not fix the leak, but 2 and 2 together and it doesn't help! Does the gear box have a breather? Thanks for your responses so far! Kevin |

yes gearbox has a breather pipe but it runs in to bell housing
if you look at above picture under the number4 you can see a pipe running up to bell housing from in front of gearlever close to the gearbox (gray colour pipe ) |
