Go back to the dealer and have a drive in another new one and see what it's like.
I too have just recently bought a new one and to be honest I'm some what disappointed with it. The overall fit and finish and general refinement isn't great, my biggest gripe is probably the gear change, I have only driven a few hundred miles so I'm hoping it will improve with use. |

Don't hold your breath for that gear change to improve mate. 24k miles and it's still like driving a 2.5 NA Defender!

Mine is a MY15 In which I have done 800 miles and I have the pinking noise when under strain
I am meeting two mates at the weekend with new 15's so I am keen to drive theirs and listen for the noise Is this a known fault or is it genuinely a fault Funnily enough today as I was driving I did wander why they make that Noise? Where do you buy your fuel?
1 garage? 1 brand? Many brands? Regards Mark. |

I've done 1800 miles now. Fuel has almost always comes from one garage, BP, I used their normal diesel for first couple of fills, then ultimate in the hope that it may help, no difference at all, so back on regular diesel.
Sounds to me as if injection timing is slightly out, like an old diesel engine running pre ignition. Very disconcerting for a new, modern, motor. Will be very interested to hear what your friends' sound like. I'll be very surprised if this genuinely is 'normal' for these engines. |

Sorry to hear you've not been impressed either. I can sympathise after my repeated visits back to the dealer already. Gear change on mine has been OK so far, it's precise, if a little notchy, and needs a slow but firm hand, just as my old Landy did. Quick changes from 1st to 2nd just result in crunching and clunking. For a short while 3rd was a little awkward, but freed up after a few miles. Fit and finish, well, they've never been great for that, at least this one keeps the rain out... |

I've said it before but if you had chance to drive and compare several new Defenders you will find that there is a tremendous of variation in the way they drive and the sounds they make, this can in part be explained because they are basically an old fashion design assembled in an old fashioned way.
Direct from the factory refined they ain't. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Not really an acceptable excuse for a thirty grand car. That makes buying a new one something of a lottery... Here in Belfast you're lucky to get a test drive in one, let alone have any others to compare it to.

Steve,
you'll be pleased to learn I've sorted my clattering sound. I now leave my brain at home and ensure the music is always turned up load. Nick, although I've had various problems the biggest / on going problem I have is the sound you refer to. for the life of me I still can't understand it. to me it's an intermittent problem as sometimes its sweet as a nut and I can rev it round to 3.5k without flinching - other times I'm reluctant to use the 'go' pedal. having replaced various items etc I'm now of the opinion its either the handbrake drum of props......or just me which I could live with if I could just understand why the noise is there, what causes it etc. feel for you mate and hope its gets sorted to a point where you can live with / enjoy it. |

Mine seemed to "pink" a bit in the first few miles after I picked it up (from brand new), it doesn't do it now with 300 miles on it.
Perhaps it needs an injector re-learn - i.e. the thing the dealer has looked blankly at you for 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

[quote="Caterham"]Steve,

I have the same story. I am not sure how "pink" noise you hear sounds, but sometimes mine sounds like those old diesels too...and it is a pain to ride. Another time it is smooth and nice to drive. I know it needs sound proofing, but this changing behaviour of the engine is very strange. With other issues (whining noise from the gear or transfer box) I returned it to the service, but they did not find anything. Tried the dealer's 90 almost same mileage (2000 km on the clock) and used it for a couple of days that was smooth and nice always it is really a lottery now I do not know, will it improve or I should find another service? |

I get to drive a new defender each year at work, and the variation in the way that they drive is quite large. My observations are,
- fuel economy gets better as the mileage rises, - engine performance improves, - engine noises vary a lot especially during DPF re-gen, - during heavy towing there is quite often a pinking sound due to engine running hotter, - transmission slop varies between trucks regardless of mileage, use, etc, These are just my observations using a defender for general farm work , and on the whole they have been reliable apart from a few small niggles. The average mileage would be about 15000 a year usually covered in mud and other unpleasantries with different drivers. |

Funny, what I was hoping I'd get out of this was a load of replies to say 'mines nice quiet and refined', but I seem to have attracted everyone with the same issues as me!
Mines now back at the dealers. They've had it since 8am. I've already had the the obligatory phone call to say 'nothing untoward found yet'. I can't believe the terrible clattering is their idea of OK. I haven't heard a diesel clatter like this in about 20 years! I'll mention the injector learn to them, again, almost certain they'll give me the 'who do you think you are, we're the pro's, you're just a pleb' look again... When they give it back (likely still not right), I'll make a video and share it here. If anyone else has clips of theirs I'd be very interested to see/hear those too. Thanks for the replies folks.
