Had a very interesting telephone conversation with Castrol technical support about not being able to buy BOT 130M, the recommended gearbox oil, and what would be the best equivalent.
I will not bore you with all the details but BOT 130M is not generally available and can only be purchased via LR dealers (under LR part number) and Castrol strongly recommend that it is the only one of their oils that should be used in 2007 onwards defender gearboxes. My plan is to follow Dgardel's route, drain the box, refill with some additives and see how I get on. Bob |

What worries me - is if its not easily avaliable - then i cant see any other garage stocking it...especially for you...or caring! So if you pay someone, anyone to service it who are not a)Contentious and b)Fully understanding of LR, what the new oils etc - your screwed and there is no way of knowing Mike |

Totally agree Mike.
The guy at Castrol said that it is ONLY available through LR now. He did say that there are alternatives but he would not recommend them especially for a 2009 model. Maybe there was a change in gearbox spec / oil spec in 2009. Bob |

Possibly - the easy way to check would be consult a manual - mine is an 08MY Im not sure if it had its oil changed when it had its first clutch, so could/should be the original oil - which may or maynot be a bad thing hearing what people experience with the later ones and gear changes!! I shall have a look at the electronic version now Mike |

You can use any 75W-90 GL-4 mineral or synth. Or GL-4 and GL-5 if it is synth as the EP additives do not corrode any "yellow" metal. Puma 110" SW
