Always thought that UK prisons should be outsourced to somewhere like Iraq or Afghanistan, low cost of running, they never want to escape, a few years of sheer hell for the scumbags, so what if the local prison officers beat seven bells of crap out of them on a regular basis, they do the crime they do the time. I bet crime in UK would reduce by 90% overnight. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Police should be charged for getting them out of burning vehicle.....at the very least should be fined!
Would have been less tax payers money if they'd been left to burn rather than paying to put them up in hotel - sorry I mean prison.  |

David, well done on adding a sense of reason to this otherwise daily mail -esque argument. Our legal system can never, ever please everyone, no 2 people nor 2 crimes are ever the same, much as it annoys me that 'scumbags' seem to have lenient sentences, we cannot make other people who have made ' mistakes' ( as we all do to a greater or lesser extent, depending on our circumstances) have to pay the price for them- we have to have across the board sentencing to be 'fair'..
Secondly, very harsh punishments do not deter crime, unlike you or I the average criminal is not educated and has not been brought up to think about the consequences of their actions, how we tackle these issues I know not, but not with knee jerk reactionary statements. We pride ourselves in this country on being measured, reasonable and fair, helping the underdog, being eccentric etc.. Lest we forget... Ranr(?) over
