I Took my 26 year old ex-military Land Rover 90 out to our Holiday home in Lovech, Bulgaria last Christmas, the drive out was a great adventure, but there is much more to come over the next few years exploring this wonderful country,
as the 90 is now living there. Our first trip out was to a forgotten relic of the Russian occupation of this country, Buzludzha, High a top mount Buzludzha, is a Monument, built by the Russians, now in total dis-repair, abandoned by the modern Bulgarian govenment, A place well worth exploring, we just didnt know how good it would be, the Road up was inpassable due to over 2 foot of snow blocking the road, but the hills were clear, and you dont need an excuse to go playing off road in Bulgaria, they welcome 4x4's And I had this wanting, to park a British military Land Rover, possibly somewhere one hadnt been parked ever before... I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.... &list=UUaY10cTw9tSX8optC0pLnIA |

Wow, no matter what we had drummed into us when our generation which grew up in the 60's and 70's with the great distrust against the USSR and Communism, you have got to hand it to the Russians that they built some very striking memorials to their ideals. Considering the cost even today of building a stucture like in the video, just think of what the budgets that were available to the military but at what cost to the people?

Love it! Inspiring stuff, your setup in Bulgaria is spokily similar to what my father and I are scheming up for Croatia even down to leaving a defender there. I love the idea of a base that direction for exploring further south and east.
Thanks for sharing the vid and it's good to hear the Bulgarians general view of off roading is positive. 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped.... 2004 Santorini Black TD5 110 XS SW left hooker for sale! 2004 Alpine White TD5 110 left hooker (work in progress) |

Oops, I should have looked here first, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzludzha where it explains that it is totally Bulgarian and considering it was opened in 1981, it must have been abandoned soon after!

Glad you enjoyed it guy's The eastern area of europe is going to be the next place to explore
and if you have an interest in history, culture, or just want to drive your 4x4 their atitude towards off-roading is welcoming. but you have to be alert for hunting/shooting parties when your out, that is the no1 pastime for most. hopefully we will have our holiday home completed 2015/16 and then we can get over there and start sorting out our next project, which is a campsite just behind our Villa, on a large flat area, surrounded by woodland. Nice video - thanks for sharing.
Place seems ripe for a Restoration/Grand Designs makeover. Can't imagine the kind of trouble you'd get into in most other countries attempting something similar. Whether that is enlightened or just 60 years behind the rest of Europe is, I guess, a matter of debate. |
