Chile 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
SSM38428 - P1169 and or P0089 codes logged.
This issue has been commented here, but I think that can help somebody.

Content Issue:
07MY onwards - Difficult to start, missfire, lack of power, driveability issues etc.
PCM can have either P1169 and or P0089 logged codes.
Pre assured Vin# Def 90 at Vin LD8A760582. Defender 110/130 at Vin# LD8A760304.

Cause:
Potential contamination in the fuel system.

Action:
Remove the fuel filter, drain complete contents into a suitable clear vessel. Note signs of any water contamination / debris.

1) If more than 40cc of water or debris is evident carry out the following:-
Drain the fuel tank.
Check the fuel tank breather location and reposition as per the illustration A attached.
On pick up variants please reposition the breather pipe in board towards the rear of the fuel tank.
If breather is blocked replace the pipe as per GTR.
Replace the fuel filter and clean out the fuel lines of any contamination / debris and or residue.
For P1169 code replace the FMV (Fuel Metering Valve), as per GTR and LTB00153. Illustration B.
If DTC P0089 is also present replace the PRV (Pressure Relief Valve), as per GTR. Illustration C.
Bleed and prime the fuel system as per GTR.
Start the vehicle and carry out the pump learn process with IDS as per GTR.
Carry out a road test to ensure the issue has been rectified and no codes have been logged.
Submit any findings on ePQR to engineering.

2) If no sign of water or debris but either codes logged carry out the following:-
Check the integrity of the wiring and the condition of the terminal connections between PCM and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and between PCM and FMV. Repair wiring as necessary and re test the vehicle.
If no issue is found with the wiring / connections, and code P1169 logged, replace the FMV as per GTR and LTB00153.
Replace the fuel rail PRV (Pressure Relief Valve), only If DTC P0089 is present as per GTR.
Start the vehicle and carry out the pump learn process with IDS as per GTR.
Carry out a road test to ensure the issue has been rectified and no codes have been logged.
Submit any findings on ePQR to engineering.

Note:-
A new tank / breather design was introduced on Defender 90 Vin# LD8A760582. and Defender 110/130 at Vin# LD8A760304.
Please submit an ePQR for any issue seen on vehicles post these vins.

Excuse my ignorance but does this look like 40cc Shocked
Hope not.
The container is about 50 x 50mm and 10mm heigh with water.

50mm x 50mm x 10mm is 25cc so no its not, but that's still not a good sign. 110 2.4TDCi

Do you think it is still safe then?
I did relocate the breather already and subsequent tests have not revealed any more water, only some left over silt from the time we traveled 6 hours on wet dirt roads.
I have not had any symptoms of power loss or higher fuel consumption etc as yet.
Is it worth taking up with LR and show them the sample?
I am not sure they would apretiate me taking a sample myself.
i am also lucky I didn't get an air lock as at the time I had no manual and thought she had a pump in the tank.
How does one change a filter in the outback if you don't carry special bleeding gear?

Yes, that's a question I too need an answer for. I somewhat blindly bought a spare fuel filter but now don't know how to change it if I ever had to (dirty fuel etc). I'm still to subscribe to LR GTR. 110 2.4TDCi

Hi Derek, I also blindly purchaced a spare filter then found out you need one of these:



I emailed the dealer in Australia and this is part of the email I got back:

The part number for the tool is 310-110A
Can be aquired from SPX Tools Australia
Contact name Glen – phone number 03 9544 5222


I phoned them last week and am still awating a reply, I'll post any info I get.

how does it work
Any idea where it goes or how it works?

Looks like it may connect to the drain and suck fuel from the tank into the filter.

Could one not fill the filter element with diesel and screw it carefully into position? Puma 110 - gone

It plugs into the injection pump supply line on the engine via a quick connect coupling. It works as a suction pump and bleeds the fuel by sucking it through the filter, up to the engine, through the tool, and then returns it back to the tank through the fuel return line.

Thanks Tim, the down side to the reply you got is three letters - SPX - in my experience this spells something twice the price of Snap-On tools in Australia Evil or Very Mad

I suspect that this must be a standard TDCi component, so there's probably a generic one on the market. 110 2.4TDCi

Just got hold of two local dealers who said "huh?" when I asked for the price and availability of the tool.

Called Landrover South Africa for their responce - still waiting for a call back. Will let you know of the answere I get - could be an interesting one Wink

I mean, how can a dealer not keep this tool for the public to buy. Imagine getting stuck in the middle of the Okovango Delta and no way of getting her started after changing the filter because you got a bad load of fuel from a remote garage selling fuel out of coke bottles. Rolling Eyes
