Adjust the drag link to drop arm. Centralise the steering wheel and adjust the drag link, it is as you say, one tie rod end moves out as the other end moves in, thus the the toe in/out stays the same and only the steering angle relative to the steering wheel moves. Basically screw it one way and see what happens if it moves further away from centre screw it the other way.

Thanks, is there a pin or something to centralise the steering box, to make sure the steering wheel is in the correct position?
I assume half a turn on the drag link would make a significant difference. |

There is provision on the bottom of the steering box for a centralizing bolt to be fitted to help set this up. With the bolt fitted, the steering wheel should be straight.
Adjusting the drag link is the correct method and cannot, of course, affect toe-in - you'd have to alter the tie rod to do this. If you fit a centralizing bolt, remember to remove it before driving off! |

First thing to check if you indicator returns on both sides are at the same spot at your steering wheel. If not try to find the closest spline on the steering wheel it self.
If that is done you have to adjust the steering rod or however it is called Click image to enlarge It the most front rod were the steering damper is connected to. If you have a RHD and your steering wheel is pointed to much to the right you have to shorten the rod. I hope yours is easier to adjust then mine. If I remember correctly the Puma has 4 turns lock to lock, so two turns back from full lock would be centre providing the lock stops are set the same both sides, easy enough to check anyway, apologies if I haven't remembered correctly, that's what working on Land Rovers for over fifty years does.......fries what brain cells I've got left. :blub

Tanks for all the advice, sorted now.
Centred the steering box with a drill bit, it had been 1 spline out, but I had already corrected that yesterday. A bit of fine tuning on the drag ling adjustment and a couple of road tests and it's perfect now. Personally I find it pretty appalling how they turn these vehicles out, from both the manufacturers and the dealers. The final inspection and PDI must be non existent................. |
