not noticed anything like this in mine, just in case check to see if the hand brake drum is very hot after a run, it could be dragging , if not I would suggest you take a ride in another one to compare (perhaps the dealer has a demo) and then if not happy get them to fix it DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

thanks for the advice, I will check the drum first. I noticed extensive heat from the underneath too, but my guess was that it is coming from the exhaust pipes so did not investigate further.
In fact I had a chance to drive a demo for a longer trip, when mine was in for the anticorrosion treatment - it was a huge difference the demo was smooth and nice, no whine at all and it was also a very low mileage Def90. I thought the difference was mainly because mine is a basic model- rubber carpets only in the front, bare metal arches in the back + noisy MT tires on. So, now I changed to ATs on alloys, put a premium rear carpet set in which improved the comfort except the whine any experience on this ??? http://www.nkgroup.co.uk/product/land-rove...g-blanket/ |

It is not unknown at all for the transfer box to whine, something which is common on high-mileage vehicles as the intermediate shaft bearings (in particular) wear. It shouldn't of course be happening on yours, but that doesn't mean that it isn't.
It is also normal for the transfer box to get very hot, especially during a long high speed run. I would be inclined to drain the t-box oil and inspect both the volume and condition of what comes out, looking for either over- or under-filling, and/or signs of bearing damage. I'm not saying there'll be any, but I'd want to rule it out. |

My 07 had the whine in 6th since new. A new gearbox solved the problem. Puma 110" SW

Transmissions are variable straight from the factory, some quiet, some less so. Gearboxes and axles can all vary in how much racket they produce, if you had the chance to try several new Defenders I bet you'd find each one was different. Steve.

Good luck getting to the bottom of it,transmission noises are some of the most irritating ones as they can drone more than a politician. My car is back in the garage in 2 weeks to have the diff changed again as the last one they put in was noisier and had more backlash than the one it replaced!! 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Mine also 07 with 180000 km on the clock with a whine in 6th when running between 110 km/h and 130 km/h. Can you help me, any idea: transfer case? gearbox? or rear axlle? |

it is easy to tell if comes from the back or center. If you spot it from the center, then try it at such speed in 5th. If it goes away then you could blame the gearbox, otherwise it could be the transfer case. Puma 110" SW
