Round here we do not have the luxury of free to air TV, DAB radio or even a mobile phone signal. And with the seeming reduction in power from the FM transmitters it seems our normal radio reception is getting worse and worse each year. What i really need is a good aerial that can get reception even in this pretty marginal part of the UK. I have been using a genuine LR retractable aerial on the recommendation of a mate and it proved to have a good reception. However it has only lasted about a year before it got snapped off on the overgrown hedges that I have to drive through on a daily basis. I guess I need an unbreakable aerial and would prefer it to go in the existing hole in the wing. I have previously tried all sorts of rubber-duck things and they prove to be pretty crap (and still snap off easily at the base).
So what do I buy? Any idea? |

Plus1, after putting a better head unit in my 110 it is showing up that the aerial I have is severly lacking. What happened to the days when we used to chuck some bent wire up in the roof lining of the tractor cab and get all the radio stations clearly, even Caroline?

Bosch Autoflex is the ultimate Defender Aerial.
Works from Mach to Welshpool (Radio2) My old standard LR aerial, used to switch to some Irish radio at Brigands Inn |

Which part of the welsh mountains are you struggling with?
My Defender has spent a bit of time in the wilderness in Wales (mid to north) and my self made bee-sting bodge (using the standard aerial cut off and a bee-sting screwed inside it) has never failed to pick up a signal. I'm not using the standard headunit so possibly my Sony one has a better tuner. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Cheers for replies so far lads. We are stuck deep in the Llanthony Valley in the Black Mountains and get almost no reception of anything (other than the police Tetra of course!) and BB too. Not that we pay any less than anyone else of course.
I know the Irish channel Tiger, I always uesd to get that on the A44 between Llangurig and Aber when I worked there. Will check out some of your suggestions. PS it is also a Sony head unit I have! |

Ah, the land that time forgot!
Great place though and can see why you're struggling. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

The Bosch works well as it's amplified. It takes a 12v feed from the radio and you need to make sure its earthed also. I added a supplemental earth cable rather cable rather than relying on the Ali bodywork.
I also think it looks rather smart (It looks almost the same as the Entreq, I originally thought they were the same but rebranded but I don't think the Entreq is amplified ?? ) |

I've got an amplified aerial winging it's way through the post, it's a cheaper version and undoubtedly a lot more fragile but I've bought it to give the amplified route a try.

Well the fleabay purchase arrived this morning, it's fitted and I'm quite impressed. Bit of a pain in the neck as the co-ax lead is about 10" long but on the other hand by putting a socket on your existing co-ax it means you don't have to thread a new lead. Just connect the power wire to a ignition live and away you go. Even sat outside my house the old aerial struggled to pick up Radio 2, I listen to a local station which isn't a BBC station so doesn't play with all the tuning gadgets but now it plays well and clear. Did the school run and where signal is lost in a few dips in woodland the signal stayed right through. I put it in place of the old aerial on the wing and the tilt of the whip works well with the slope of the screen. The thing is flexible and is better quality than I expected

Which live did you connect to? I've got the co-ax running to the wing but with no aerial as I've just cut it off as it was in the depths of the engine compartment?
Click image to enlarge Presumably it's easy enough to just put the cut end in to a female co-ax socket for the new aerial to receive? Old thread but just what I'm looking for. Ok, so aerial is on but the reception hasn't improved by that much. Which live can I tap in to to see if that makes the difference? There are a few plugs within reach but I don't want to mess anything up! 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver
