Before you start any disassembling leave your question up for a little while as I'm sure others will add in what they know. But I think it would probably be worth having a look at the rotary mechanism behind the fascia. From memory it's all fairly self evident when the front fascia is off. My complete dash came out for general refinishing and trim work, I saw it at the refitting stage. The fascia covers the mechanism your interested in which is a combination of a rotary unit connecting short 'levers' redirecting the air flow, it is possible that something has either broken or is jamming this mechanism. Unscrew the fascia with a star driver and with a bit of fiddling, it comes away exposing all the controls beneath. Depending on what Radio / ICE unit you have this will need to be removed also. The exposed controls underneath all show (again more or less) how they are assembled into the dash so you can work out step by step how to get at things. This link gives you a view of the main fascia and top panel lifting away (the top panel just clips in and is held by the main fascia) http://caraudiosecurity.com/ct23lr04-land-...unting-kit As for the amount of ventilation you get (with the two settings available to you) I would get the main dial / mechanism operational first then step through the various settings progressively. you may find something which explains this aspect of your problem as you go, like a jammed 'directional valve' within the heater assembly. Not really the same problem, but I once had this sort of issue on my 300tdi, which was more 'cables' than 'levers' it needed lubrication at various points and an Arial lead fixing correctly so as not to get in the way. Can't help with cause or cure I'm afraid, but if I were you, just out of warranty, I should try getting it sorted at your dealer first, before pulling anything apart...

As said remove screws, and radio, poss the radio cage, do you have the code ?.
Then the good bit there about four metal clips around the top of the panel, they need a good tug, my self I use a plastic trim / clip remover so not to damage the plastic. They can be tight, mine was . Don't pull to hard or jolt it the wires behind aren't very long and the heater cables are tight too once it`s out a few inches it`s easy to work on. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

I had a very similar (but not exactly the same) issue with mine. Eventually sourced it back to the cables that move the vent gates - these are very similar to bike cables, where the clamping of the shroud and appropriate lubrication is important. Even though I knew what it was and it was fairly easy to fix, I took the landy back to the dealer as mine was still under warranty. If you want to remove the centre console to have a peek, as others have said here it's very easy. Might be worth also checking that the dial isn't busted? Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

Be gentle with the heater control panel - if I recall correctly a replacement now costs around £400 and individual parts are not available.

That's very helpful. Hopefully this shouldn't be too difficult to sort out. I'll take the panel off and have a look. I'll let everyone know how I get on - might be a couple of weeks though as I am about to go away with work for a few days. Much appreciated. Doug |

Regarding the thumping from behind the dash, I had the same symptons and for a while I was sure it was coming from behind the dash somewhere in the middle. Then one day the missus commented about the noise coming from the front passenger door, now normally she doesn't notice any squeeks / sounds, so next day whipped the door skin off and tightened everything up, and thumping noise now totally gone, and I was sure it was coming from the dash So maybe the case with yours, Cheers Keith |
