Hello all,
Defender has developed a chirpy engine noise, sounds similar to a belt slipping just much quieter but constant. Its present whether its in gear or not and seems to be in time with the revs, theres a ticking noise present but I always assumed that was par for the course with these particular engines? Apologies for the poor description but its not a buzzing or a screeching noise it honestly sounds like a couple of budgies under the bonnet! Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed of course! Cheers |

Just had a look into this, have always sometimes felt the vehicle throw itself slightly off to the right at high speed but not enough to know if i was imagining it or not... This is another symptom of loose/dodgy prop UJ's too right?

Its always there although sometimes not so obvious on cold mornings but maybe thats luck of the draw... No remap and I'll have to check where abouts its coming from after work, cheers for the ideas |

My questions are because the gasket between turbo and manifold can fail, this causes a ticking noise in time with the engine revs, and a squeal at certain revs.

Seems to be more from the passenger side of the engine from what I can tell, no squeals but more of a constant twittering noise, bit like the missus.

I had exactly the same sound on my -08, unfortunately I cannot remember what it was, but can have a look at the invoice from the stealership, I'll get back when I am in the car in the afternoon. Defender 110 -08

This sounds like a belt noise, often if a serpentine belt particularly the poly V type start to run out of line they start to chirp. With a trigger spray bottle, spray water over the belt while the engine is running and see if the noise stops. I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

When I had a chirpy noise it was mainly at tick-over, it went quieter with more revs, it turned out to be the serpentine belt tensioner, the fixed and moving parts were rubbing against each other due to a collapsed pivot bearing.

I had a look and just as said above it was the tensioner for the aux belt. Defender 110 -08

Thanks gents, I had considered it may have been a belt of some sort but really not enough knowledge to back it up so cheers for the suggestions.
So for my own knowledge the serpentine and aux belt are one and the same? Should I be looking for a particular type of belt if I ever need to replace? Cheers Folks |
