Defender on the motorway !
Hi

Been a TD5 owner for about six months now and love it. Enjoy playing with the mechano set which is the Defender and have do a few jobs now with a lot of help from this site which is appreciated.

I was late for a meeting this morning and travelling on the motorway to Glasgow I thought I would try and put the foot down. Now I normally just plod along at 60mph on the motorway, in fact that's as fast as I go anywhere ! But trying yo get Tank up to 70mph or even 75mph was a real effort !

Question is, whats the normal motorway cruising speak for a TD5 ? The Tank is de-catted and I have taken off the ERG valve and also fitted a snorkel. I am think of either a BAS or Alive intercooler and Stage1 mod and wonder if that would mean I could get 80mph out of Tank ! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Your thoughts please Smile

PS I was at the Scottish Off Road Centre again at the weekend and still amazed and the hills and mud Tank can get through ! It has way more skill than I do Smile

Just a suggestion and before you do anything Else check you have not got rubber matting or carpet under your throttle pedal that is stopping the pedal achieving full travel, quite a few people complaining about lack of power find that is the cause

It is a while since I had a TD5 but I could easily get the speed you mentioned and the Td5 90 would tow a caravan easily at seventy , not that I ever did !!!

I have a totally standard (in terms of engine and gearboxes) Td5 in standard tune and usually cruise at 55, occasionally 60. It seems happy there. Anything above that and it sounds like it's starting to scream a bit. I do intend to change to Disco transfer gearing and get it remapped, but It's some way down the list! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Definitely worth looking into, I've done mine and it makes motorway and general driving much nicer, as long as you don't intend doing too much towing. I'd check that everything was running ok though as a normal Defender should reach 70 fairly easily. Check the MAF is clean, air filter is clean etc. A bigger intercooler won't make a massive difference unless you have a remap, I changed mine to a Serke fast road, remapped and changed the transfer box to 1.2 rather than 1.4 and it now makes it lovely to drive on any road, much better economy, quieter and just nicer.

I concur, 70 is a bit of an effort for my old girl. It'll do it without too much drama, but doesn't seem totally comfortable. On a quick run over the A68 trying to keep it at 60 up and down hills, with four in it and some kit on the roof, the fuel guage takes quite a dive!

Saying that a 100 mile round trip, yesterday, cruising at 50, returned around 34 to the gallon, brimming it before and after the run. I was very impressed, or my maths is very wrong. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

Try again without the snorkel connected, they can be quite restrictive

hi, i find 70 is a normal and sociable speed as i have changed the tranny cogs for the disco 1.22 ratio. Travelling at 60 now gives me over 30mpg even when towing and 70 still returns a 28/30mpg roughly. top speed down hill is now off the dial too!! Whistle

Mine used to fly, 70-80 cruise no problem with alive stage 1 and disco gears. But it was the remap that made the difference, the remap also made the high speed quieter than the disco gears did, they just helped further. I was running mantec snork and would pull all the way to 100mph with no problem running mud tyres, winch and bumper, full roof rack.

And I miss it Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

I found my Td5 110(bog std.) @ 60-65mph to be right in the "power band" Laughing with stock gearing , it would pull briskly to 70mph, but that's not saying it was not making a racket!!!!!

Roverdrive, intercooler, twin air intake & Alive map...... makes life a little easier Whistle
