I had the SVX Dinitrolled in Belgium in June 2012, so that is now less than 2.5 years ago. It was done on a clean, dry and rust free chassis at the time.
A few weeks ago I noticed that in a few spots on the bottom of the main chassis legs, as well as at the left hand underside of the gearbox cross member, the Dinitrol layer has been peeling, or at least damaged. It is still sticky in those places, no rust at all.... Then at the office we checked the Defender Hunter of my collegue named "kitoper" on here, which has had its Dinitrol treatment here in Switzerland from new in May 2013, so now less than 1.5 years ago. At the same spots as mine, there is some Dinitrol peeling/damage too. Anybody know if this is a general issue in those spots after a while? Or other explanation? Could it be caused by water splashing up to those spots from the tires (doubt it)? Or, now that I think about it, as the peeling is on four spots of the underside of the chassis legs only, could it be because the dealers 4 post lift is repeatedly placed in exactly those 4 spots (sounds likely)? But then with this last possibility I do not really understand why there are also some marks on the crossmember under the gearbox... Just curious really if others have the same issue, or if this on both the SVX and on the Hunter is a coincidence? There must be something explaining this, as it is absolutely in the same places on both our trucks. For the rest, the entire Dinitrol on the underside remains picture perfect. Not really worried, as it is still sticky in those peeled/damaged places, and there is nothing rusting. In any case, after next winter in which I won't be driving much anyway, the SVX will go to Leu Carrosserie & Spitzwerk AG in Biel-Benken, Switzerland http://www.leu-ag.ch/ for a full respray together with kitoper's Hunter which needs to go back then for a Dinitrol warranty inspection and updating. So, any explanations why this happens on both our trucks in these same spots? Anybody else have same experience? Some iPhone pictures below. As munch said that's exactly what it is. When I dinitrol I have to then apply dinitrol to those areas once it's off my two poster ramp. CSK Automotive

Munch, now that I look at the pictures again, that seems the most logical explanation to me. So can I get that type of Dinitrol in a simple aerosol spraycan and reapply it on those spots by simple spraying a repair layer? Or should I just leave it as is for now and wait til it gets a full redo next spring?
Eric PS and a bit - the good thing was that crawling all the way under the truck with a flash light, I noticed that everything remains very tight with not one single oil leak. Being under the truck I also felt for the rubber thingy above the gearbox which lets the condensation water of the airco out and which apparently sometimes blocks. Surprised to feel that there is that rubber thingy indeed, but it seems to have been cut open from the underside to leave a permanent much larger opening. Wonder if my dealer did this, or if it came like that from Solihull in the first place. Or maybe the garage in Belgium who did the Dinitrol treatment may have done this. The opening is quite large, no way it will ever block. You never actually own a Defender. Tks Chris for reconfirmation. My truck goes several times per year to the dealer for oil changes and other, each time up on the post. So do I need to do something about this? Can I buy that type of (brown colored) Dinitrol in a simple aerosol spray can? I have no compressor, and just for this topping up I don't think I would get one. just get a aerosol and puff it over , next time it goes on ramp it will do the same
don't think I would want to put a ramp leg on a flat cross member covered in wax , wax can make the pad slide on a flat surface like that ive seen legs slide out , not a pretty sight when your under it !!!! better have the proper chassis mounts for ramps , there like a channel so legs cant slide on a narrow chassis |

^^ Chassis channels, good point. My truck goes beginning November to the dealer for changing summer/winter wheels, so on the ramp again. Will ask them about those chassis channels for their ramps.... I guess proper chassis channels would also not damage the Dinitrol that much, correct?
Eric PS - specially for bpman and mrs. bpman... Saturday 8 November, Autobritt open doors day, and entire morning dedicated to changing summer/winter wheels, as well as testing the new LR models, and....... raclette . not really better for protecting the coating , as they still have a rubber pad but its inside a channel so safer to put on chassis rail ,
normally most put the pad on the radius arm mount as it pushes in to the rubber and wont slide as easy , and better then flat cross member if you google images "chassis pads for bendpak ramp" your see the sort of thing I mean on the yellow ramp legs |

Hello ericvv
I think Killer90 and munch90 are right...these look like lift points to me, also probably on your gearbox cross member too. The circular impressions can be seen in some photos. what Dinitrol product did you use, as the brown / bronze finish looks to be similar to cavity wax rather than the 4941, which has a matt black finish when applied. I think I remember reading some surface grades of Dinitrol do have a non-black finish... just wondered really as I think the cavity wax stays more 'fluid' and would be less suitable if used externally. I noticed after I did mine, the 4941 defiantly appears to 'cure' and toughen up some what, it wont resist marking at a jacking point, my trolley jack marks the axles or differential even with a rubber pad. So I jack in the same places and will touch up with 4941 as necessary. I also noticed WD40 acts like a mild solvent and loosens the Dinitrol, not as much as white spirit but be 'directional' if spraying underneath. Time to 'touch up' your truck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Hi Skip, I did not do it myself but had a professional do it. See below thread...
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13479....l+belgians Now, I do not know which products they exactly used, but surely two, a brown one for the chassis, and a transparent cavity wax. I think the Dinitrol chassis products exist both in black and in brown colors. See the list in below thread... http://www.rejel.com/rejel-store/underbody-wax.aspx I'm not sure about "touching up" myself, as I want to avoid spraying something like the brown stuff which hardens on myself, and then have a situation where water/moisture might find its creepy way underneath and stay there.... However, I do have a Dinitrol aerosol touch up spray can with soft wax, maybe I have a go with that, but only in November after the truck has been on the dealer ramp again to change summer/winter wheels. Thats correct, I think these places were where the liftpoint have contacted the chassis.
Here are some pics of my chassis treatment, you can clearly see the circular lift points here. The brown/gold colour is just after treatment, it turns black after some time. In 2 years time some small spots where peeled or chafed off, but then I don't think that Eric treats his truck on some serious greenlaning/off roading like I do ... 😉 At least every two years my truck gets an update treatment, even sometimes treatment of minor patches in between. You can use Dinitrol in aerosol spray cans for this purpose. Vincent, what makes you think that? Seriously now, which Dinitrol product number spray can do I need to buy for this topping off? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Hi Eric, the full Dinitrol treatment constists of three layers: Dinitrol ML, Dinitrol 1000, and final coat is Dinitrol Metallic (the brown/gold coloured layer). Some info on the website of the company where I had it done (it is in Dutch, but you don't have problems with that, I guess ). So I thinks you best use Dinitrol Metallic for treating patches. Cheers, Vincent

Vince, thanks for above advise. Have ordered a set of 4x500 ml aerosol spray cans Dinitrol Metallic on amazon uk.
They obviously did not accept a Swiss delivery address for these aerosol cans, EU addresses only, so I have them shipped to someone living just accross the border here.
