2012 defender SW classed as commercial
If that's so, are they subject to commercial speed limits and tolls and more important...can I drive through richmond and bushy royal parks without being fined?

I noticed my 110 SW is taxed as LGV, which I was surprised about,

Not sure what that means though, apart from the guy at the tip (sorry recycling centre) moaning and then making me feel as if he has just done me a massive favour Rolling Eyes

As a multi purpose vehicle the normal speed limits apply (as a car)

Other restrictions such as using council tip, driving in the LEZ, etc apply as a commercial. www.td5.org

That's a bit of a pain, presumably, toll roads will be the same.
Plus with the proliferation of number plate recognition in cities I'm wondering if it will restrict future access to centres etc.
And for me Royal parks will fine commercial vehicles for passing through.

I have a 2007 TDCi 110 DCPU, N1 tax class, N1 type approved.

- I have never (yet) been asked for commercial rates on any toll roads or bridges.

- I have never had any more trouble with tips than I do with my M1 Disco2. (As far as tips are concerned, the council has a legal duty to take private household waste delivered by the householder irrespective of the means of delivery and therefore cannot legally discriminate according to the vehicle used. It is often a bit harder to get in under the barrier though).

- As long as the vehicle has an unladen weight not exceeding 2040kg and full- or part-time all-wheel-drive (ie the vehicle is a 'Dual Purpose Vehicles' as defined by C&U'86 (as amended), then normal (ie car) speed limits apply. (Note - the definition of a DPV in C&U'86 is more complex than this - this is simplified to the criteria relevant to Defenders).

- Since the long-anticipated withdrawal of an MOT concession last year, a Class 7 MOT is now required for an N1 DPV (previously VOSA allowed under concession a Class 4 MOT on these). This has little effect but to increase the price by about a tenner.

- I have no idea how the tax class affects the LEZ (which I thought was all about emissions and nothing to do with tax class) since I have absolutely no intention of driving into London ever again - it's a grotty and horrible place! Any other cities which apply similar measures will also be crossed off my list of places to go. So I can't help on this one!

Personally I can see no down-side at the moment to driving an N1 vehicle rather than an M1. My DC and my Disco 2 are similar vehicles with similar capabilities and are used for the same purposes, yet one costs approx £220 pa and the other well over £500 pa. Where is the sense in that?

LEZ is ok, pre 2002 have a problem if not reg as a station wagon I understand.

More worried about Royal parks

In Scotland Light Commercial status means commercial speed limits and the multi purpose bit makes no difference to the Police and Speed Enforcement sections. I spent more than 3 months researching this and I got the same response EVERY time! Commercial speed limits apply!

Ive only had these 2 problems myself. Mainly the tip is fine but they got a bit funny before with mine. Im always stung on the tolls even with the roof off. Although for this and the sake of the odd 50p is more than saved by the £200 odd saving at tax time each year Defender puma dormobile camper

True about tolls, there's a £300 difference to make up.
I'm guessing insurance is no problem?
I've emailed LR re the royal park question, but I'll probably just speak to the park police.I'm in there a lot.
The thing worrying me a tad is with no tax discs now, isn't everything going to be number plate recognition , which will say commercial.

Having driven many miles across Scotland in my SW, I was lasered 3 times in one journey on A class roads travelling at 55-60 mph. I wasn't stopped and no ticket arrived in the post.

I spoke to LR on the phone about royal parks, they didn't know and suggested DVLA or HMRC.
A grey area then.

Unless Scotland has somehow opted out of the UK (I believe the recent attempt failed) it is still subject to the provisions of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and you have been given incorrect advice.
