Powder Coated or Painted?
I've got a set of Wolf rims from a forum member, it appears Land Rover only paint the fronts, as primer are on the backs of them. So I'm thinking about having them either Powder Coated or Painted, what would people suggest is best?

Paint as it's easy to touch up if damaged. I've had wheels powder coated before and if the get the slightest knock it causes a big chip that's a pain to try and cover up without sanding back and re-painting, also a terrible tyre fitter managed to chip the whole rim all the way around a freshly powder coated wheel two days after it had been done Evil or Very Mad

^ I would say get them painted ..

If you curb a powder coated wheel it'll peel a big section off ...

Hello SS90

3 in a row...I would paint them too.

Both finishes can be excellent, much depends on the quality of the base product and the application.

I use a local Auto Paint Shop Supplier and Lechler Paints, the 'key' (sorry) with alloys is to get the base etching primer right, then basically you can follow with (near enough) any colour you like, colour code them to your Defender or a contrast colour (personal choice). Finish with a gloss clear coat (matt is also possible).

Numerous stuff on the net about how to paint wheels... SKIP

Powder coating on steel rims looks brilliant if done really well - but be aware that it chips (off-roading?) and tyre fitting can ruin the rim edge and damage touch up can be problematic.

Paint is far more forgiving and can be easily and effectively touched up if damaged and is my own preferred option. Both finishes rely on good quality preparation, materials and skill - so a 'cheap' deal may disappoint?

For paint - there are some very tough finishes available - I have used a two part epoxy used for off-shore installations in a salt laden environment. Just don't pick a colour that might be very 'similar' to a large corporate's house colour?

I would go with paint as well. I haven't yet had any item that was powder coated that hasn't flaked / chipped / bubbled. I'm sure it is all in the preparation, as with paint, but it seems that many firms cut corners on the quality of the powder finish. I suspect that there are more places available to you that could do a good job of painting them than there are good quality powder coaters. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Thanks guys, painting it is then. If I attempt to have ago of painting them myself what's the best course of action to give a good durable finish? They're in very good order to start with. Would enamel coach paint be a good choice to paint the wheels with? I've got a compressor so will be able to use a sprayer.
