It was dampers that mainly broke on that trip. not much else though. and in standard form they're much better than a defender.
Cost more, yes, but you get what you pay for. |

G Wagons cost more then Defenders? Yes agreed.
Now if they are better in stock form then Defenders why were they doing shock absorbers in whilst only part way along the CSR?? The G Wagon which did not break shock absorbers was a modified version for the military! Am not knocking G Wagons but it could be argued that particular trip was not well prepared. Edited to add 5 series 2/3 started the CSR, 3 finished it. One vehicle pulled out as driver broke his leg. The other pulled out with starter motor problems. Not bad for vehicles over 30 years old. There are plenty of people like the couple in the article that have done similar long term travelling in Land Rovers, without any wailing or gnashing of teeth regarding reliability or strength. Good maintenance and carrying appropriate spares and tools is required. For any vehicle.

Land Rovers / G / Hilux are all machines, some are better in some ways but all are made out of stuff and screwed together with variant tolerances. I reckon they all work as intended. Mines better than yours is something that started in the playground when we were six with "my dad's bigger than your dad"
I bet I could drive like a nob and break a brand new Sherman tank if I wanted or nurse equally Series 1 over rough terrain for miles so it's a bit pointless to say "this did this, that didn't ner ner na ner ner!" I have a very nice Canon, I have a Canon because I was given some lenses. I have no idea if it's better or worse than a Nikon! But seriously the next person who tells me I should have bought a Nikon because it's got a faster dangle widget that is better than my Canon I will feel like (but won't, manners you know) punching them in the face! I have a Land Rover, I learn't to drive in one on a farm in the Dales so I have soft spot for them, I like mine I will have one for ages. When people tell me "should of got a Toyota mate, Land Rovers breakdown" I really feel like saying, "did you not want a better wife than that, mate, there are much nicer models out there with better faces and smaller arses!" I don't obviously as it's rude and none of my business. The great thing is the story not the make of vehicle. |

I thought it was having a Nikon and being told you should have bought a Canon? That's my experience anyway
