Stripped transfer box
I have a secondhand transfer box to replace the knackered one on the 110 however the drain plug has sheared off and it looks as if the thread in the casing has had it too.

Is there an oversize replacement plug that can be made to fit? Am trying ovoid going down the route of a helicoil if I can.

Any other suggestions would be great especially if anyone knows of a Land Rover magnetic jobby that is bigger and can be retrofitted.

Hi v8bobber

More info'...

'the drain plug has sheared off'...is some of it still in the casing Question

assume not as

'it looks as if the thread in the casing has had it too'... has it Question

If the entry few threads in the casing are stripped but the inner threads are ok
then match the drain plug thread with a longer bolt and use what a standard
drain plug doesn't reach...

Not sure of the exact arrangements on a TD5... but worth a look at Eric The Car Guy

Failing that then a Helicoil if there is enough material directly around the site to take it... should be. SKIP

Either way you will have to run a drill and tap down the hole, then find the right size bung / bolt to fit. So my self I would just fit a heli coil and keep to a standard bung.

I know there are lots of iffy comments about heli coils, but my self I use them on alloy gearbox casting`s on ducato`s and I`ve not had an engine fall out yet.
If your worried about the heli coil coming out when you undo the bung just add lock tight to the coil, then fit the bung the next day so it has time to cure, this has worked for me on many alloy sumps on old mini`s ( it`s cheaper than a new gearbox). Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

The drain plug on an LT230 is in the inspection cover is it not? why not just swap that whole thing over (8x bolts IIRC)

job done.

I'm going with the option of tapping the thread out to a bigger size and fitting a bigger drain plug

I'll let you know how I get on

I thought my drain plug had stripped but now realise it is the magnet that has come loose as in this and many other threads. V8bobber, how did you get on?

Munch90, do you have any details on the repair kits you mentioned? 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

I THINK its m12x1.5 thread , you would need to double check this

if so then this should do it

eBay Item No. 160944766218

make sure to tap goes in dead straight, otherwise the copper washer wont sit flat

brilliant, thanks.

I'm hoping my threads are ok, the bottom bit screws in nice and tight, its just the magnet is stuck at the top blocking off the hole, but this is a great looking fall back for if they have gone 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6
