R380 gearboxes
Are there any differences between discovery and defender r380 gearboxes and are there any differences between 300 tdi and td5 r380 gearboxes? The prices vary massively and reconditioned ones are a couple hundred quid different too Rolling Eyes So could I fit, say a reconditioned 300 tdi discovery r380 gearbox in my 2004 td5 defender?

Have a few words with Howard or David at Beaumont Land Rovers/4x4Gearboxes based on the outskirts of Halifax. You can walk through their workshop so you can have a look at what is going on. They have been around for the odd decade or two.

Recon gearbox prices are normally priced on exchange gearbox. No exchange gear box then add £200-250 to price.

Thumbs Up I'll give them a bell when I'm ready to recon but my plan is to by a second hand gearbox and I already have the transfer box, then get everything recon'd and buy in all the other bits I want to do at the same time and do the full job in a day or two to save hassle. So I wondered if there was any difference between the boxes or if I have to get a td5 specific one. I can then either sell on my old units or save them for a rainy day Laughing

Having to look for a R380 gear box for a customer so doing some research as I am not a mechanic Razz

The answer to your original question is YES but there is always a but.

Have a look on the Ashcroft website and you will find

There are 2 ways to do this:-
1) strip the gearbox and fit the Defender selector rail (FTC4588) and the Defender yolk (FTC5120) with grub screw FTC4536. Once these parts are fitted you can fit the R380 defender top housing and linkages or you can also fit the Defender LT77 top housing but you will have to remove the 'T' piece under the housing which is held in place with 2 M6 screws.
2) rather than strip the gearbox we make an adapter piece that you can fit to the end of the existing selector rail then fit the Defender yolk to this part then fit the Defender top housing. We can supply the adapter, yolk and screw at £ 75 + VAT,

I thought I remember seeing on an old microfiche card I've got, that the Td5 spec box had different/larger/teflon coated bearings?

Sadly this is a thread i'll be watching with interest, as my R380 box has developed a bad oil leak.... along with much worse enagement of gears/banging. Think its on it way sadly, the poor old 90 hasn't moved in a week and a half. Big Cry

Need the oldie fixed as out here snow might be just around the corner. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

i think i remember reading somewhere the td5 had things done to it to make it quieter than the tdi boxes. don't quote me on it though Very Happy My 109 thread
