1996 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Epsom Green

Brake problem....

From day one of owning my 110 300 tdi it suffered from brake pads rattling in the callipers. That issue still hasn't been resolves however one suggestion at the time was to change the front pads and callipers.

Having had the pads and callipers changed, and brake fluid whilst I was at it, I immediately noticed poor braking which is still present some three weeks later.

The problem is upon first pressing the brake pedal braking is soft and poor. Release the brake and brake again then the braking is excellent, just as I remembered it.

I initially thought the system had not been bled correctly so it went back to the garage who bled the entire system again but still the problem exists.

Any ideas folks? The original callipers were AP Lockhead and the replacements were Bearmach. Could it just be crappy callipers or am I missing something here?

Check your vacuum hoses and vacuum pump and servo.

If everything else is fine and there are no leakages and there is no air in the system might be one of the above.

if new discs were fitted then wheel bearing could be set up to loose allowing disc to push pads away from it , first push of pedal puts pistons back second push gives good pedal and braking effect

new discs and pads will file spongy tell they bed in

Thanks for suggestions to date. I should have said the discs weren't changed. THE LR has just gone throughout the MOT fine so it shouldn't be the bearings although I will check as that suggestion makes sense whereby the first application of brake is spongy then the second application immediately afterwards is really good.

What I can't work out is prior to calliper change the braking was good but now with new calipers it's as I've described...

to rule out vacuum probs, put foot on brake hard, start engine, you should feel the pedal drop substantially! if it doesn't move you definitely have vac problems. it may move a little, you could still have vac probs! My 109 thread

OK... i've tested the vacuum pump as suggested by g-mack. Pumped the brake several times, start the engine and there's no give whatsoever. So that means the vacuum pump has gone? Do I need to check anything else related to the vacuum pump?

pipe work from pump to servo ?

not unknown for the servo to crack , have a real good look round the front of it where the master bolts on just out a bit from the flange of the master cyl

I removed the vacuum pump pipe into the servo and there's loads of suction. The garage inserted some fandangled smoke machine into the servo via the empty hold and state it's not losing compression. Still puzzled then other than maybe the bearings... even though it passed the MOT three weeks ago when I first discovered the 'fault'

still could be air in the system , just because you cant get any out doesn't mean its not in there

a lot of times the master is blamed , someone thinks its a master problem , changes master , bleeds system all ok , but its the extra bleed that done it not replacing the master

when the calipers were done was the system left to drain out , or sealed , change calipers , then bleed to change fluid

I would still have a good look at the servo ,
