abs and warning light flickering when under throttle
Hi strange one this, had some problems originally with the 3 lights (warning, abs ,tc)

It is a 2001 TD5 Defender 90 X-Tech

fixed those by aligning the sensors, now when i drive all the light go out (handbrake doesn't seems to work)
but as you apply power in any gear the abs light flickers and sometime the warning light, but as soon as you come off the power or coast with very very light throttle they go out.

have had it code reader (garage spec 2013 snap-on) and nothing is showing as faultly

then the other day i though while driving (slowly though) i'll just slightly pull the handbrake lever up just until it starts to bite and hey presto the flicking abs lights goes out

the previous owner had fitted a new handbrake cable and there seems to be a lot of travel in the handbrake lever about 30deg of movement, i've checked the switch and that looks all ok

i've done the usual checks for earth cables by the ecu's and checked for any signs of damp and oil in both looms
i've ran a new earth wire 5mm thick from ecu compartment to the bulk head and this has made no difference

the TC & ABS work fine (tested these off road on some gravel at a local MX track) checked brake fluid levels and float has full movement

is there a switch on the gearbox or sensor that might need cleaning replaced and if so where about's is it?

would like to try and get to bottom of the flicking before winter and fix the handbrake light coming on and off

Thanks for any help

Chafed cable under the vehicle. Mine initially only manifested itsel in damp conditions but in the end got worse so I could find it. Intermittant faults are always the worse to find. Took a while but on page 3 I finally located it.

I had same problem and spent months looking, eventually noticed despite all earths being good that there was spiking voltage to ECU !

Earths on battery boxes on both drivers and passengers side of my 90 seemed intermittently faulty, ran a new earth from the battery and through the chassis to both sides.

All sorts of issues sorted ! Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

fixed
just an update fixed it finally today

first off replacement handbrake light switch from LR, that sorted the handbrake light working but the lights continued to flicker

i then remove the whole handbrake assembly and touched the wire to HB switch straight to the chassis, red light came on wiggled wire no flickering

so suspected the the handbrake assembly isn't earthing correctly, so rubbed off some paint on the body beneath the HB and re-fitted went up the road and wiggled handbrake no more flickering

Problem solved

oh also adjusted HB to 3 clicks now instead of 5 Thumbs Up

Try cleaning the White earth header block (plug with loads of wires going into it)beside the pedal boxes and steering column on the bulkhead (left hand side engine bay side near the expansion tank) earths through the stud its fitted to. This controls the instrument warning light earths.
