Fitting a winch wiring on a Puma
Finally bought a winch (Goodwinch). Has the solenoid on the side type. Is there room under the bonnet for the solenoid?

I'm going to run the wiring along the chassis, no holes (or few as possible). Any advice/tips by Puma owners who have electric winches fitted I'd be grateful for. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Have a look in my Gallery (working Land Rover) you will see pictures of a goodwinch being fitted If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 HCPU Stornoway Grey
Installed mine yesterday.

Looked under bonnet for a place for the solenoid but didn't find anything convenient. Left it on top of the motor for the moment.

There is room for it under the diver's side fender. You can install one of those little lock boxes to replace the plastic bit covering the hole in the fender and install the plug for the remote there. (In the Malaysian version bits of the cheap non-Land Rover alarm are mounted in that location, so I can't use that spot until I move the alarm stuff)

As for the wiring. no need to drill holes in car (except for the interrupt switch at the battery box)

I pulled the negative in through the rubber grommet where the earn goes out. and cut a cross in the rubber grommet covering the 2nd hole through which I pulled the positive.

Goodwinch supplies plenty of straps to secure the wiring to the chassis.

I ran my positive through a protective flexible plastic pipe. There are some rather sharp bits on the chassis. Didn't want the wire to rub and short out.

Is that a terrafirm commercial bumper? I think a have a fitting problem with the eyes from the bumper and the connection from my bottom protector which use the same position. Do the bottem eyes from the bumper go on the outside of car chassis bar or the inside? My protection plate is connected on the inside.

I have a Warn xd9000 with a separate solenoid pack, couldn't really find anywhere to fit it under the bonnet so I fitted it next to the battery in the seat box along with wireless remote unit. It meant I had to make up extended cables from the solenoid pack to the winch which I ran in cable protection sleeving along the chassis. One advantage is the solenoid acts as a battery isolator so there is never any power to the winch unless it is in use Thumbs Up

but there is power to the isolator all the time. if the isolator fails it can fail to allow current to the winch motor, how would you then turn it off? Cheers

Fitted mine yesterday using the Defender wiring kit from Goodwinch/David Bowyer.

Left the solenoids where they are and ran the wiring along left side chassis rail, earth I connected to the main earth on the transfer box as per the Topix document. Live I ran through the grommet using the supplied conduit and wired up to the battery positive via the provided cutout.

Only hole drilled/cut was for the cutout through the front of the seat box.

i would be tempted to run the earth straight to the battery. although the connection is good now, corrosion there will impair the winches ability. in my experience always run winch terminals straight to battery, with cut off fitted in the +ve. Cheers

I was going to do so but there was no terminal bolt on the negative side of the battery - need to procure one. My cutout was pre-wired on the +ive on the kit Thumbs Up

I'd second that. I ran both winch connections to the battery terminals, and also used unusually heavy gauge cable (industrial arc welding cable). I replaced the rather inadequate earth terminal connector on the battery with a traditional clamp to allow the additional connection. I fitted a manual cut-off switch to the front of the battery box. The earth lead runs from the battery to the winch itself, and both the winch and cable are properly grounded at the winch end.

The original earth lead (which runs from the battery to the chassis then on to the gearbox) is barely adequate and it is not at all unknown for it to fail.

I totally agree with your point which is why I also have an additional isolator fitted in series before the solenoid pack mounted on the front of the seat box.
My point was that I never have a high current feed to the front of the truck powered up unless the winch is actually in operation. Avon & Somerset Search & Rescue
