2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Zambezi Silver
Sawtooth alloys stone chips and scratches.
Hi there,

Took delivery of new 90 XS HT August 1st. Factory fitted with black sawtooth alloys. Look the business and was told they were "heavy duty" whatever that means. But, after just six weeks road use and the occasional trip across a field or two, the rear wheels are badly stone chipped. Yesterday drove through some muddy ruts and now the fronts look like I've polished them with a Brillo pad.
They are ment to have a powder coat finish, but this is more like a plastic coating. If they hadn't been a factory order I would have said they were cheap, non genuine, copies.
I am now in negotiation with LR to get them replaced. Not sure I want the same ones again, but I do like the looks.
Anyone else had any experience (good or bad) with sawtooth alloys?

Cheers

Mike.

Powder coating is just a plastic coating. That's why it peals off and helps rust fester underneath it like on front bumpers.

I don't have any experience with them other than agreeing they do look good, but to be honest if your going to use your land rover properly I'd stick some steels on. I went for cheep and cheerful modulars and they are still in fantastic nick considering what I have dragged them through and never really washed them.

Hi Mike,

I have exactly the same issue. Genuine LR Sawtooths, despite my best cleaning efforts (and I have ocd when it comes to cleaning cars), my wheels look just like they have been cleaned with a brillo pad. To be honest, I think you only have to look at them and more scrathes appear! I have just had to learn not to look too closely. Poor quality finish from LR yet again. Evil or Very Mad

I've just done a LR experience day & the instructor noticed I had sawtooth's on mine
He said they had a defender with them on last year and within a week they looked awful,
Black coating peeling off, scratches etc

Just what you need to hear! Big Cry

That's interesting perhaps they've had a bad batch, powder coating should be quite resilient.

Think you might be right, it could be a problem with the later wheels. Met a guy today with an X-Tech that has been used every day for the last 3 years on a farm. No signs of damage or scratches.

Looks too me that LR has changed supplier.

Knowing that the older wheels were okay and other owners have had problems with newer ones will certainly help with me dealings with LR Customer Services

Thanks for your replies. I'll keep you all posted about the outcome.

Cheers.

Best of luck, I put up a post on the detailing forum and one guy said:

"All alloy wheels except those with lathed faces have been powder coated from the factory. It'll have a powder clear on top of colour and primer based powder coat. Powder coat is as tough as youll get on any wheel. Only paint is weaker than powder coat. Diamond cut alloys are usually powder coated with clear lacquer but its much thinner and thus more damage prone."

Hi All,

I just thought i'd add my 2 penny worth as i used to work at a large vehicle manufacturer's "Wheel Plant"

Its probably slightly different as we made steel wheels from scratch but for finishing they were dip phosphated which was like an etch primer, then electro coated satin black and finished by baking in the oven which made them extremely tough.
The wheels were very resiliant to everything and i've lost track of the No of sets of (LR) wheels i put through and never had any problems with any of them chipping or rusting.
In fact i put "LOTS" of stuff through the paint as it seemed rude not to and all of it lasted really well and could be over painted if i wanted to as the black was really just an undercoat but as is the way of large Co's cost cutting they decided to stop painting the wheels silver on cost/time etc.
I never actually put any alloys through the system but (and i'll stand to be corrected by the scientists) i can't see why the results would have been any different.
Maybe its possible that due to cost etc the process may have changed and from the sound of it, for the worse.

Mark

Due to new environmental regulations, all paintplants should go to a more "green" way of production.

They maybe changed the pretreatement, before the powder coatng, from chrome to chome-free?

"May be the dreaded BLUE box suppliers ? "

Was that just a irrelevant dig at BP, why would a 6-week old 90 be factory fitted with BP aftermarket wheels?

Personally I am buying a set of the BP Sawtooth alloys and having them changed to Graphite. I know they are available from LR in that colour but they are quite pricey (moreso than the black ones) so decided to go down the route of having them refinished at a local wheel specialist. New set of 265/75x16 BFG AT's and I will be booted again.

With reference to the dig at BP, I ordered a new Puma bonnet last week and decided to go for the BP option as it was quite a bit cheaper. Opened the box and there was my nice new bonnet C/W LR Genuine Parts stickers (as I suspected would be the case).

NEWS UPDATE: RESULT!!!

LR Customer Services have agreed to swop all 5 wheels under warranty.

The local LR dealer has placed an order but has been advised that the Sawtooth alloys are now on 'restricted supply". He said this is usually due to supply difficulties and/or quality control issues. He ordered 2 early last week and they came through in a couple of days.

I will update when they finally get fitted.

Thanks to you all for your feedback.

Mike.

Yeah, I've just had a call from the dealer to say they went to put my order through but the sawtooth wheels aren't on the system, presumably it's this issue why they've been restricted.
