No point in trying to remove my back windows as they all have heavy duty mesh grills riveted behind them, no point going in through the alpine windows as i have a full baulkhead.
All the very nice man did and he obviously has had to do this a lot and has some cool kit so he does not damage the paintwork is use a plastic leaver wedge on the top of the drivers door put a small inflatable pad in the gap, blow it up gap in door big enough to get a stainless steel wire with a rubber finger on the end couple of bends and pop the door lock easy as that. Open the door put a wedge of plastic near the lock and bend the door top back to where it should be. 3mins max How safe is your defender ??? Thank god i have got extra dead locks for when i park up at night. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Happened to me a few months ago, same thing, engine running whilst scraping the ice off the side windows. Luckily i was at home and got the spare. But couldn't use the spare key as the drivers lock barrel had seized solid. Anyway, it kept on happening, peep to open, it would open, and instantly lock again. you had about a second to open the door or it would lock. once inside close the door and "clunk" it would lock. Took it back to the dealers to get it fixed and told it was a faulty relay.
All ok now (Fingers crossed!!!!) |

Mine did this to me this morning - several miles away from civilisation on the Isle of Skye, stopped for a 'comfort break' engine running, drivers door only on the first click so not shut properly, went to open the door to get back in and as soon as I touched the button - clunk - the central locking activated and locked it.
Had to walk about 1\2 a mile, then got a lift to a friends house a couple of miles away. Went back with a coat hanger and with a bit of fiddling managed to get it open by lifting the button, glad the the door wasn't closed properly. I've been trying to get it to do it again (whilst at home with a working spare key in my pocket), but can't re-create it! any thoughts? Hello noworries4x4
Thanks for the post. Just knowing this can happen makes me think I really don't want to experience your lock-out dilemma. The well hidden extra key is probably the route, I did this years ago (but now don't), a waterproof, magnetic box... time to revisit this. That YouTube video makes you realise, if they want in... I don't know of many people who could fit through the hole ! , maybe a video of how to climb though a rear quarter light hole would be good to see
if the rear door is locked by central can you open it from inside , I didn't think so , but never checked |

This happened to me miles from nowhere parked up in a field at the side of the Tweed last season. The ghillie made a call to the local garage and out he came about an hour later. On seeing him about to force the door frame with a set of tyre levers I asked my mate for a shot of his Highlux keys, the key was no more than 10mm into the lock and with a quarter turn of the key the central locking activated.
It's happened a couple of times in very cold weather, so when the new vehicle arrives I think a key will be getting planked somewhere !! |

jeez that's scary!!!! That's fitting rear quarter windows off the shopping and to do list for my 90 HT now!!!!! As an aside, on my previous late 80s 90, and my series 3 I used to be able to unlock the tail door and drivers door from the outside just by waggling the handle quickly. Wasn't as quick as that though!!!! A lock will only deter an honest man!!! |
