Those damned plastic cap thingies are annoying, I've got a strip of rubber in the "catch" bit of mine.

It seems we have the same problem although yours sounds a little louder than mine. I also changed my clutch (including the dmf) not too long ago but since the last service I have a very similar noise that also causes a vibration in higher revs when under load. I've replaced the injector loom so far and from reading other posts I'm going to change the crank position sensor then see how it develops.

Interesting ...
Does yours do it on acceleration and maintaining speed? But disappear when removing foot from throttle completely (over-run)? Does yours always do it, or only noticeable sometimes? When you say vibration, do you mean through the gearstick? Or an engine vibration? How many miles is yours on? Would be great if I could get this sussed! Might try a compression test at some point. Just a wee bit worrying as I dont want it to be something to expensive. Past few months, every penny has gone into fixing/refurbing things. |

Mine seems very intermittent, sometimes it's quiet and sometimes very noticeable. When under load getting up some speed it seems to vibrate the whole car which is why I think it might be the dmf, also when I put my foot on the clutch pedal under load (not pressing it just resting on it) I can feel a pulsing and from reading around the Internet that seems to point towards dmf too. Another thing with mine is when driving along if I press the clutch pedal the sound changes and almost sounds (I can't think of the right word) loose. Mine has done almost 110,000 now and is a 2004 on a 53 reg and since I've had it, it has been very well looked after and if it's needed anything at all it gets it.

Sounds very very similar.
Mines a 2004 '54' with 96,000 on. So also very similar. I've not tried the resting foot on clutch. I will give that a try on the way home! So even though you're DMF is pretty new, are you still thinking it could be that? Mine was used for a few years as a builders truck for towing his trailer, then when he got a transit dumper, it became the 'third vehicle' for 2-3 years and got little use, hence why I think I'm getting all the big bills as I put it straight into daily service as my only 4-Wheeled vehicle! |

The dmf diagnosis is purely from reading reports on the Internet and the fact it's so intermittent. I'm sort of putting off doing anything in the hope the problem will become more obvious so I'm not just throwing money at it. How does your gearbox feel? Are there any problems getting in any gears or any whining noises etc?

I'm also thinking of changing the prop shaft uj's as mine seemed to start having problems after a service (which I watched) and the only thing that happened underneath apart from checking bushes was the props got greased and although you wouldn't think this could do anything it just seems a bit coincidental, it's also quite cheap to replace them.

My gearbox is/feels somewhat well used. It's quite raunchy/snatchy getting into most gears. Used to be just 2nd to third, but all gears now have a bit of a crunch to them. Which is part of the reason I'm wondering if the clutch/DMF is on it's way out also.
On the 2 oil changes from the box, there's not been much if any swarf or metallic residue etc. The R380 out of my old 300Tdi 90 felt better and that had worn bulk rings between 1st and 2nd! 2nd can be a pit of a pain when first starting up from stone cold. Sometimes requires a bit of double clutching and fair bit of force. I've started to blip the throttle between changes which can help 50% of changes slot into place easier. I have also meant to do the UJ's to, but haven't yet. I have one set sat on the shelf, but not enough for both (one set got used on the 90 many moons ago and not replenished my stocks!). I regularly grease then and noticed it's stopped feeding a couple of the legs at most of the ends. However they feel fairly solid to what I've experienced in the past. Mine however does this rattle when stationary. So I sort of ruled this out. How about yours? Does it do it stand still? |

To be honest I'm not sure if it does it at standstill as I always seem to be in a rush I'll give it a go over this week and see if it does, it's just the timing with the service which was funny unless I hadn't noticed it before. I think I might get a dmf, clutch slave, uj,s and clutch plate together, then get the gearbox refurbed and do the whole job at once.

Well mine started not to long after I did injector seals and washers I think (and a service to) ironically. Might do them again to be sure!

Yeah mine pulls so well now which is another reason I'm thinking mines not engine related.

Just got home.
Tried resting my foot on the pedal but nothing that felt like a pulsing. Not ruling the Dmf out as mine just might not be at that stage. I testing the driving again and same result. I get the rattle on acceleration and on holding the speed. Let off and it's quiet as a button. I went home a slightly different way today that has a long dwn hill section. Left in 5th and foot completely off the accelerator, rolled a good 2 miles at a constant 50-55 mph and she was quiet as a bottom. The instant the foot went back on the pedal it was back. This is driving me bonkers. Had a good poke around the engine bay. Few things. The rattle is 80% more pronounced on the intake side! where the xhaust side is much quieter. Where the inlet manifold bolts onto the block, it's quite damp. Possibly residue from oil seeping down from the rocker gasket, but it's not the same kind of damp. There's a good weep of oil down the back of the block. Fairly clean under the rocker cover half moon (new gasket) but very wet around what felt like a disc, possibly the camshaft seal type thing? Need to look at the diagrams in a minute. To dark to get bonnet off and get a good poke around behind! |
