To be reliable... You would need new dirty and clean air pipework (and a modified air box), special build turbo (unique to me), ECU calibration, and a complete new cooling pack (radiator and intercooler) especially in hotter climates. We would also need to look at your exhaust set up. And a couple of other modifications... I'll happy fly over for a few days Reading your post again - 450Nm is quite achievable, but you will only have 150bhp (and not 180bhp). MY IRB450 package is an intercooler, air box mods and calibration change (plus a few other minor mods). This will give you a genuine 150bhp and 450Nm (and in either a sport or normal mode). 180bhp means you need to drive everything harder which is outside the capabilities of the standard turbo (and with my kit you would end up with 500Nm). The Defender has always been de-prioritised. By Rover/Land Rover. Why it is the dinosaur we know & love. Ford (& arguably BMW before them) actually did most to make Defenders less farm hacks & more relatively refined. But too little too late as we know. What older models have most need of remaps? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. So come across this thread after looking for reasons not to buy an autologic remap.
Well my earlier post about a 12 year free trial almost came true..... Need I say more than having trialed the irb410 I'm saving for the irb450 and hope to have the funds very soon. So clearly there's some truth in porny's words of wisdom - having seen a clear improvement in economy while driving much quicker is quite remarkable. My only big question is why on earth it doesn't come out the factory like this when there's such a push on being green? Loving it. Last edited by Caterham on 7th Apr 2015 6:43am. Simply speacking, a OEM map done for respect the emission limits are not "efficient" for maximize the engine efficiency. With a good remap (and with the EGR blanked) not only you increase the power, but also increase the engine overall efficiency. That means that at the same "driving style" the remapped engine need less fuel..... Just for explain you: The EGR recirculate part of the burned air (no oxigen) to reduce the combustion temperature (and reduce the NOx). But it is clear that the engine not runs at 100%.... really interesting thread guys, thank you.
i have always been impressed with the detail Porny puts into his posts (clearly passionate about what he does). would be interesting to read Alives and BAS's views on this thread regarding longevity, accompanying mod's, etc... |

I spoke to a guy at Billing from BAS and he said that anyone looking for better fuel economy from a remap would be wasting there money, he seemed very honest about what they did with no stupid claims. People like Porny on this forum are to be thanked for taking the time to explain why they do what the do , its not the case with them all.

I suspect most people wouldn't go down the remap route for improved economy but I'm not entirely sure why?
I'm the only one on here to have suggested a circa 10% improvement in economy which very roughly means you're saving £9 each fill up (on a 110), so if you're doing 400 miles per tank that's £20 per 1000 miles, £200 per 10000 miles......wouldn't take too long to pay for itself plus you get extra oomph along the way. So with 3 years interest free credit it's a no brainer |

This is why I love forums! Great topic and the information provided by all (especially you, Ian) has been most useful to me.
Mapping etc is something which I keep on researching for when I get my new 90 in a few weeks time. That being said, I really can't justify doing anything until the warranty runs out etc. But will definitely be keeping an eye on developments during that time! On a slightly different tack, I'm guessing there must be a point when getting any sort of extra oomph from an engine using remapping etc is then limited by the physical ratio of the gearbox? ...and to change ratios in a gearbox is entering the realms of lottery wins! Ian, just put of interest, what sort of money are we looking at for your "full works" job? Cheers, Ben |

depending on what you're after but my suggestion would be try the IRB450 first. my guess would be that this is going to be sufficient and if not then I guess you'll need to allocate a lot of money not just for the engine works but if you're going to go any further than a 450Nm (and use it much) you're gonna wanna be looking at brakes, suspension, wheels/tyres etc.
any way I'm interested to see how the economy has changed (if at all) following the latest improvements. what struck almost straight way was the extra speed I was carrying without even realising. within a mile there's a speed camera which is a few hundred yards from an island and normally I'm doing about 50 mph when approaching it....this time I was well over and off the gas slowing so as not to trigger it (not sure if it's hugely smoother or something but it's surprising how much quicker you find yourself travelling)? |

As someone else pointed out, good thread.
I have a couple of questions of my own, if I may. I am thinking of getting a map done, likely by the usual suspects (Alive, Twisted, BAS, Bowler etc). First, I remember someone saying that a number of 'branded' maps are actually the same under the skin. Given the cost and that image is not important to me, whereas results are, can anyone PM and explain? It would be much appreciated. Second on a more general point, I would eventually like to do a full tweak including new Allisport Intercooler, hoses, perhaps exhaust etc. If that is the case, should this happen before or after the remap? Does it make a difference or will a remap automatically recalibrate if done after? This is for a 2011 2.2 Final point, are all Stage 1 maps a self fit? As I live half way down France a return journey to the UK to have one fitted would cost more than the map itself. As such, can I pop it in myself (with garage/mate assistance) or do we need diagnostics, 4x4 rolling roads etc? Any ideas or answers, very much appreciated. Do all your mods first, then get it PROPERLY re-mapped, by someone that knows Defenders, to take full advantage of those mods.

+1 Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
