South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
chaps, I've started noticing that there is some major clonking if I come to a stop in neutral. It only happens right before I come to a complete stop.

is that the clutch again? Confused --

It could just possibly be the handbrake shoes snatching the drum. Have you adjusted the handbrake recently? Try slackening it off a little to see if it makes a difference.

Popped by the indie this morning and he tightened some loose nuts on the handbrake drum and rear propshaft.

He recommends we change the bolts & nuts if it is still doing in after a few day.

Clonking is not as bad as before and much reduced, will book the landy in for the work. --

Not sure if it helps, but my 2008 Puma is the same. I have had it now for 6 months and it has only done 30K miles, I have put it down to driving "modern" cars for too long. I am re-learning my driving style with the Puma, basically make sure I don't go anywhere near the throttle until the clutch is fully up, Then it drives smoothly, but if I try to speed things along as in a modern car, I get a real clonk if I touch the throttle slightly too early when changing up.

I found this out by sitting in the car as a passenger one day (which is rare) and the wife was driving and I noticed how much smoother it was between gear shifts, yet we weren't going slow. So I had to think it might be something I was doing!

It's witchcraft. As you will have realised from the responses neither dealers, independents or forum members have any idea why some Defenders clonk. Mine suffered terribly from it, from new, listened to all the feedback about driving style, listened to dealer telling me they all do that, had two new transfer boxes then one day I lost all drive, left it overnight and in the morning drive restored. Mysteriously all the clonking and banging had disappeared and it drives great, witchcraft yes, however, I can never forgive those that kept telling me all Defenders do that, or I don't know how to drive, because clearly there was a fault somewhere in the drive chain just no one has any idea despite them being around for so many years. I can only assume something was mis aligned and jumped out/or in (I am retrospectively thinking high low box must have jumped into neutral when drive lost and that somewhere in the ensuing panic I must have re engaged it)
I am afraid to give you the bad news, however, it's going to be down to pure luck if yours gets fixed because I have come to realise no one has a clue.

On that theme it does point to a poorly set up gearbox or transfer box from new. It may be that the linkage on the transfer box or even gearbox sticks not fully engaging the relevant boxes fully and after use have bedded in hence sometimes the "Self Cure" phenomenon that Land Rovers have happen. The mind set of LR and their technicians with their "They all do that Sir" is a ploy for the Defender to undergo the "Self Cure" all by itself.
We know that these vehicles are sort of hand made but, it's many hands that are involved and not all are as concientious as we'd like so there is a greater case of human error.

I have 130 with only 5000 miles and it clonks when changing gear, I can eliminate the clock with careful timing of gear changes but it is hard to do every time. I just assumed that "they all do that". With all those diffs and whirly bits I didn't find it surprising. Reading this thread I am starting to worry! Is clonking normal??

My own 90 clonks and so did the 14 reg one I test drove. Both of them stop it with a bit of careful gear changing and letting the clutch in and out at the right moment.
