1995 300tdi regular oil changes 150k
This has been bugging me for months now! as revs climb there is an awful booming in cabin! very loud. dip clutch and its gone. can also here it stationary hen revved but not as much. first thought was blown exhaust.checked for leaks all good, replaced all zorst gaskets including manifold. started to think it might be related to my knackered head gasket. but thats all fixed now and still have the booming. discovered when i move air intake pipes around the bassy engine note changes. so im fairly sure the booming is something to do with the air intake side. air intake pops &list=UUf_5uG8etFh7eThbmvanACA have replaced all air box rubber mounts, new filter and removed all pipes up to turbo to check for splits, nothing!! drove it today with wing to filter piping disconnected and its a little better. (goes much better like that! like getting a tune up) removed all pipe work from wing to turbo, test driven and still booming! checked and rechecked valve clearances, again no difference. someone suggested a bent, sticky or non sealing valve. Though i would run it past you guys to see what you think. My 109 thread my youtube channel Last edited by g-mack on 13th Aug 2015 4:36pm. Edited 1 time in total |

possible inlet valve not sealing
best thing is get a compression check done , or better a cylinder leakage test as you tell which valve it is then. do you have air compressor ? |

Maybe a burnt inlet valve....do a quick compression test to determine a fault before disassembling!!!! Working towards Carry on camping!

does this sound feasible?
whilst inspecting the original head (now off car) i discovered ALL 4 exhaust valve seals were sat at top of spring!! so effectively no seal at all. i understand oil will be getting into bores, but surely as the exhaust valve opens and the spent oxygen is forced out, a lot of it is going to be rushing past where the seal should be. causing loud exhaust like droning? or am i wrong? i have researched this to death and never found this theory My 109 thread my youtube channel |

If the exhaust valves isn't sealing, you will have a loss of compression, as well as leakage of exhaust gasses into the rocker cover. This would pressurise the rocker cover and it would follow the path of least resistance which would be the rocker cover breather into the air box, which would make the popping noise. Also, when the engine is off, the oil left in the rocker gallery will drip down into the bore past the non sealed valves.
However, it would have made a very audible and visual chuffing from the oil filler if removed. But, not a bad shout Badly adjusted tappets or incorrect valves fitted may be the route cause there. |

so lets say the exhaust valve IS sealing properly, as the exhaust valve opens to let out spent gasses, the gasses could be pushed up past stem seals couldn't it? especially if the stems and guides are out of tolerance. My 109 thread

Yes this is true, but this would be on the exhaust stroke which is lower pressure than the ignition stroke so the pressure on the stem seals would be less.
However, if it is not sealed on the ignition stroke then the pressure would be far greater so more likely to overcome the stem seals, particularly if they are very warn. |

thing is the seals aren't doing anything!! they are stuck at top of spring! My 109 thread

update;
new turner head fitted, popping gone! booming droning still there!! ok so ive eliminated engine!! and popping being cause of booming. i was convinced it was not from exhaust as when im under car and it is revved exhaust sounds fine. BUT!! im starting to think its one of these travelling noises!!originates from somewhere different to where it is heard!. SO next thing to try is a center silencer. gonna get a bearmach one for under 40 quid and hope for the best!. on a plus note. engine is so much quieter and smooth with new head My 109 thread my youtube channel |
