High-pitched whine when driving & clunk on clutch pedal
Hi all

Recently I noticed that there's sort of a high-pitched whine coming from the passenger side of the car when I'm driving. It only occurs at low speeds, and is most noticeable when changing gears.

As soon as I depress the clutch, you hear the whine decreasing, and when stepping on the accelerator again, the whine is back.

It sort of sounds like a muffled air-raid siren, if that makes any sense. Anyone else experience this or know what this is?

There is also a clunk when releasing the clutch pedal, you can only notice it when stationary, whether the engine is running or not.

Sounds like a clutch problem ! A Comparison Between Logs and Dogs
Both are very popular at Christmas,
But it is not generally considered cruel to abandon a log,
And dogs are rarely used as fuel.

surely if it were a clutch problem, the noise would appear when the clutch is engaged, ie., while changing gears, not when drive in engaged? Question

my local landy specialist tells me it's all normal - the whine is the turbo spooling at low speeds, and the clunck is also normal.

The Td5 did not have these sounds Rolling Eyes

Did you check on turbo“s hose? or perhaps front output bearing. You can take the cubby box out and the plate underneath it and a have a better look. Puma 110" SW

I wouldn't know what to look for Wink

I trust him, he knows his stuff. The noise only started recently when the engine started loosening up, he says it's normal.

Naks,

Can you describe better the noise?
As I comment some time ago I had a noise like a slippery belt (quite loudy) that turns to be the turbo inlet manifold seal.

Other possibility that also can be (as MK said) is little perforation in the turbo hose, but the noise is more low pitch (also personal experience)

Cheers Eduardo

Eduardo, I will try to record it and post it on YouTube.

But the best way I can describe it is it's like a low-pitch air siren from ww2?

Bad news... the mechanic had a poke at the turbo and he says there's a lot of play in the shaft, and it will not last much longer.

he's never seen this kind of play on a turbo with only 8800km - rarely sees this on Td5's with 180+Kkm on the clock even!

So off it goes to the stealer for a turbo replacement.

FYI, this is a recording of the whine.

I parked the car and reved it until the whine appeared.

Ok, so N1 City says the play on the turbo shaft is within specs, and so is the whine. Spoke to the mechanic who did the work, and he says everything is fine, he found that the handbrake was set too tight and reset it to the correct level. Other than that, they gave it a clean bill of health.

No choice but to believe them and see if the turbo lasts...
