Hi, I have this whine that increases in pitch with speed, its quite noisy and the feeling is that its from the transfer box. So we changed the oil and added some anti-friction fluid which helped a bit but the whine persisted.
BTW, the whine ceases as soon as I take my foot off the gas. Then the mechanic noticed there is some play in the propshaft where it enters the transfer box and some suggestion that there might be a worn bearing causing the noise from that point. Can anyone tell me if this sounds about right and how much I might expect to play to have it replaced and is it likely to solve the problem? Please help ! |

Yes, there are metal filings...
How much was your new transfer box fitted? |

Around £1200 to £1300 for me - although I'd let it go too long on a long journey. Should have stopped early but the problem escalated too quickly and before I knew it the internals of the transfer box had done so much damage to one another and the transfer box housing that it meant a reconditioned complete box had to go in.
If you get this looked at early, it will probably be a case of just new internals in the transfer box which may cost half of what it cost me. Get it looked at ASAP, if you can drive something else in the meantime I would highly advise it. I've got some photos of how mine looked somewhere, I'll try to dig them out. |

I had a recon transfer box fitted and this make a wineing noise which occurs as the speed increases sound like wind noise but I think its the transfer box, it sounds like a rotational noise which increase and decreases with speed, ive put it in neutral while driving at 50mph and it still wines, its going in this week to be looked at. I had an independent checked out a noise a bit like the moaning of bagpipes where I couldn't place the source...cook said gearbox, I reckoned engine indy said rear axle.
Cook was more correct as the stealer said transfer box. 98K and in last weeks of warranty so should have got an exchange box but none in Oz so a new item was fitted. Seems that in low range there may be a noise but I'm not going to get paranoid about it. Plenty of other noise to listen to..... AlanH. |
