OBD2 ELM327 WiFi adaptor
Notice these on eBay, cannot complain at the price.
Does anyone have one? My main question is can they be left connected all the time or do they have to be fitted and removed as per used?

Do you need proper diagnostic kit for it to work or does that do the diagnostic ?

That plugs into the a Defender diagnostics port.
You can then use an IPad or iPhone app to access any DTC's and extra info. (Uses WiFi no wires)
Basically it gives you detailed information from the electronic system in a Puma Defender.

A late TD5 maybe, I cannot be sure so can't really advise on the technicalities.
What system does the TD5 have?

Q: why use WiFi, isn't a Bluetooth version more useful..?

I'd choose a bluetooth version unless you are already using the bluetooth on your device for handsfree. I installed an ipad in the dash of my audi when i had it and had a bluetooth version plugged into the OBD port 24/7 to connect with an app to show readouts.

I'm pretty sure the OBD port is switched through the ignition, although that could differ between vehicles, so you have no worries about someone connecting to it when you have left the vehicle.

I had an odd experience with having one of these plugged in all the time. Driving along quite happily and suddenly lost all power and electrics for a second or 2 and then all back on again. Shocked Dash lights came on and temp needle went to the max and down again .. Basically looked like a reset .. Including resetting my trip. It happened a couple of times. Since I've not had it plugged in I haven't had this issue since.

Tried some cheap Bluetooth ones and had no luck .. Ie they don't work. Waiting for a gopoint bt1 to come up on fleabay. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

With regards to your OBD socket I would be very careful what you connect to it. The system obviously relies upon set resistances and voltage values. It could potentially have serious and expensive consequences connecting anything 'unproven and cheap and cheerful' to it as detailed by Carrotbay for example. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I'm not set on keeping it plugged in, so from what Carrotbay mentions I'll probably use it when not driving.
I'll give it a try when I have actually got my Defender back! Big Cry

I use a bluetooth version with the Torque app on the phone - my expectations were pretty low when I bought it but it's been incredibly useful and is cheap enough to leave in the car without worrying about it. Have used it on a number of cars to clear fault codes. As others have said, wouldn't consider leaving it plugged in permanently.

I bought one of these a while back.

Kept getting the MAF sensor code which i assume is related to the RAI that I fitted. I only use it every now and then to reset the engine management light which comes on occasionally. I downloaded an app on my iphone (called OBD car doctor, which is free) which then connects to the OBD sensor when plugged in. It sends out its own wifi signal somehow which then talks to the app to let you know what the fault code is and let's you clear it if it is nothing to worry about.
I wouldn't drive around with it plugged in though.

I think it cost about £8.

Used one last weekend and it caused the temp gauge to go to the top of the scale, the MIL light to come on and the engine went into limp mode. Decided that it would be better to purchase a proper product now.
