Importing a Defender TD5 to Switzerland
The way talks are going at work we are looking at the possibility of being relocated to Switzerland.

I was wondering about the feasibility to keep my Defender. I have owned it for a bit over 5 years now and I don't want to let it go.

1) Can I bring in a 2002 Defender TD5 and register it in the country. Are there crazy import charges attached or straight forward process?
2) Modifications - I have suspension lift, 35's, re-map, de-cat, EGR delete, LED light bar. Any issues with any of these for MOT or similar? Insurance?
3) My truck started life as a 110 hard top. I have since converted it to a HCPU pickup. I would convert it again to a lhd station wagon if we did this move. Any issues with this kind of thing?

Essentially, I want to be above board with everything so I just want to know if it makes sense to keep the Defender or buy a new (old) one over there.

Ok, what's the main hurdle in getting one imported?

Modificateions.. right.
It's pretty difficult to find a Defender around here of any vintage without any modifications! Laughing

Each and every part TUV certified is it?

If I had a better idea I'd be able to un-modify I suppose.

Dan

You need to obtain a certificate of conformity from land rover then each and every modification needs to be certified - it's no an easy task

Just reading this now. In principle it is not difficult at all to import cars into Switzerland as part of a relocation to Switzerland from an EU country or even from the USA. (Back in 2001 I imported our USA specs Volvo and Jeep here, and it was an easy process, but admit, both cars were not modified at all...)
Why don't you ask Land Rover Switzerland for advise about your specific case? Start with sending them an e-mail request at: info@jaguar-lr.ch
But, as bpman says, a truck modified like yours might pose some hurdles for import Swiss homologation. It is not that there are no modificed Defenders here, but those mods have been done from a Swiss starting base of course. So if you plan to stay for a longer time in this country, and if you want to join the Defender driver gang, maybe the best solution will be to sell there and buy here. Also plenty of second hand availability here, this country has a lot of buyers who will buy a new Defender, and then find out that it is not really their game. Here is the link to the prime Swiss 2nd hand site (not in English though) http://www.autoscout24.ch/fr/voiture.
But first thing seems to check with JLR Switzerland. Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Alright, thanks lads. Looks like I will have to reconsider my position so. Sad

On a more positive note it would appear Defenders are readily available over there. Smile

United Kingdom 2005 Defender 90 Td5 HT Caledonian Blue
dantastic... what happened in the end?
I missed this thread, was in Arrow Oz for 5 months May to Oct.
I have a UK 2005 truck cab 90 and drove it in last Dec. on a temporary basis.
In Jan I got a stiff letter from customs asking for money and that I must register it.
My problem was that a truck cab could not have a Cert of Conformity according to Mike from LR customer relations. I got an official LR cert in Switzerland ... I found Mike less than helpful.

I got to MoT and rego stage then ... got sent to Oz.
I'll pm some details on request, but for all:

Do not dream of importing a new one. They have mind blowing CO2 charges, - for a defender, 000s .

Federal customs will want - money.
The Canton will do the MoT then register it (both for money)
You of course need to have Swiss insurance lined up (money)
And yes you will need a cert of compliance (money) which includes abgas (exhaust gas) results.

Second hand prices can be steep, (yes... money) but generally they will be in good condition.

Summary: It quite possible you need the Kantonal Strassenverkehrsamt on your side.

And, when you go for a Swiss MoT ... your Landy has to spotless, inside and out, ... if the chaps get their hands dirty .. no chance Rolling with laughter Welcome to Switzerland. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

France 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Corris Grey
Following on from PPAD:

Worth remembering that where you work and where you live can often be in different countries. i.e., work in Geneva but live in France, work in Basel but live in France etc etc. Not often I can say France is cheaper and or/easier (administratively) than anywhere in the whole, wide, world, but I can confidently do so when compared with Switzerland.

Here you need just a Euro Certificate of Conformity, changed headlights - (DIY job), an MOT (Control Technique - 60-70 bucks), and then a little bit of paperwork and 350€ admin fee at your local Prefecture et voila. New plates, when the registration arrives, are 30€. The lengthy bit is waiting for the Euro CofC. Once that's done it is a couple of weeks of admin. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....
