I'd be tempted to give Mantec a quick call. The self tappers seem to work themselves loose every few months, so they must be used to people wanting new ones. (I only caught mine in time and tightened them as I read a warning from alantd). Peter

Yes - good thinking Mr Flips. I'll give them a ring in the morning. Interesting that this seems to be an issue. I was surprised to see quite how little space there is on the other side of the A-pillar.
Rivnuts is a good idea too - but I lack the kit and would like to keep it as simple as possible. Still keen to hear experiences and ideas... |

i've read some where that rivnuts can be done without the tool and just a bolt and a couple of washers, time consuming but for one or two that wouldn't be an issue.
http://www.fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html just an idea. |

The OEM ones are usually rubbish anyway and rot out! I replace all the fittings of anything I buy with stainless replacements as soon as I can! It is always the cheap fixings that ruin a good product usually! If you've a steady hand and a cobalt drill small enough purchase some stainless hex head self tappers, drill the heads across the flats fit them and then using steel wire wirelock the heads together, guarantee they'll not undo without cutting the wire! Alternatively Loctite 221 should hold, but no guarantees with that method I'm afraid! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Just spoken to Mantec who are exceptionally helpful.
They are sticking two replacement self-tapping bolts in the post free of charge. They suggested Loctite as well. We'll see how I get on. I'll post what happens... |

Well, the kindly donated Mantec bolts arrived yesterday and I have just found out this afternoon that it's the holes in the screen frames that have rubbed as the old bolts wore loose - as a result the new ones don't fit and so don't hold the RAI bracket tightly (or at all in fact). I've done a patch job with silicone sealant and some Loctite threadlocker, but will need to sort it properly.
The problem I have is that the hex head M6, M7 and M8 x 10 - 12mm are like hen's teeth. Screwfix - nothing nor any of the other usual suspects. I'm going to ring Mantec again to see if they have any bolts as short but fatter to solve the problem, but failing that do you guys have any ideas of where i could source some? I've Googled and hunted but nothing. Last solution is to remove the RAI altogether. I'd rather not. |

The Mantec replacements were useless. The **** at the stealership who fitted the RAI obviously used a 6mm drill bit to make the hole for the 6mm non self-tapping bolt. Hence the failure after time.
After MASSIVE amounts of hunting for a suitable bolt/screw, I have found it - a 6mm self-tapping radiator screw with washer from Autopart in Chelmsford. Solid as a rock (so far) with thread locker and silicone sealant. If anyone ends up having this wobbly loose OEM/Mantec RAI windscreen problem, I have a box of the perfect replacement bolts for the rubbish put in the box with the RAI. PM me and i'll stick some in the post. Over and out. |
