I'm hoping to place an order very soon for a new 110 XS - cheap road tax and all.
My worries lie with turning up to collect / pay for truck and find the body alignment is cac. I know they're not great but some are shocking. Take the front wings for example where to you draw the line between acceptable and not? |

If you can see any of the panel gaps using Google earth you might want to think about trying to reject it though there is no guarantee that the dealers won't say "They are all like that sir, it’s a Defender"

Don't pay for it until you're happy with it! You haven't even ordered it and you're worried about it already??? The stress and lack of sleep will probably finish you off before you get your ar5e anywhere near it! Take a chill pill and stop fretting...mine was fine as was many other forum members! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

when the truck gets to the dealer inspect it before it's pdi'd.I did with ours,if your not happy with it get them to order another one,good luck 2.4 90 XS

thats an interesting point grockle - check it before pdi ?
would that make it easier all round to send it back if not up to scratch? just waiting for 1 july before placing order as if i can't get the 5% nfu discount then I might have to reconsider (apparently the nfu voucher needs to be valid at time of purchase (not order). so looks like I'll be heading for a stornaway 110xs on a '11' plate? |

The quality of my Utility Station Wagon as far as door alignment is concerned was a lot less than my previous County Station Wagon. I sometimes think this might be because they pay less attention to their commercial vehicles. 1964 Series IIA SWB Truck Cab - gone

you can reject even when you go to drive it away,checking it as soon as it gets there saves you time waiting for a replacement truck 2.4 90 XS 1968 1/32 scale Britains 109 Pick up. |

Just don't get love struck!
When I went to pick up my brand new Disco 3 (my first new car) I missed loads. I noticed a scuff on the gear lever but missed the fact that they hadn't fitted the factory underbody protection and steering guard. The dealer was clever though, when we tipped up me and Marie got a bottle of champagne each and she got a bunch of flowers, so it almost makes you feel wrong to complain. (not that i noticed obviously) Lesson learn't for next time. |

Don't cross your bridges before you come to them. You are right to be concerned with the quality of your purchase so wait until it arrives and you inspect it.
1-Look at the rain channel or gutter along the length of the vehicle. This will give a good indication as to how your body alignment is. If the body work is badly out this will not run straight. 2-Stand behind the vehicle and look along it's length along the curve of the panels above the rear wheels. If your doors are off they will catch your eye as the curve continues along the doors. 3-Look at the middle row of seats. If the seat base is not in contact with all the supports on both sides you have a problem i.e. one side or corner could be raised. 4-Apply the central locking and try to open the doors. The wire used to carry power to the rear passenger doors is too fine and it breaks where it bends. Easily fixed with heavier wire. 5-Start her up, turn her off and listen for a rattle in the clutch springs when you turn her off. 6-Remove the seat bases and look in the seat boxes and check for your jack etc. This will be under the passenger seat. Do the same to the drivers side just to let them know you mean business. 7-Next to really impress them remove the cubby box or centre tray which ever is fitted and then unscrew the inspection plate and check your gear linkages.(Bring screwdrivers for this). I had great fun doing this when I was looking at one in a showroom. Then lie underneath and check for any oil leaks. After that put the inspection plate back and cubby box or tray back. If they object to this tell them you will go elsewhere. Let them know you know your stuff.Your pre delivery inspection will be better than theirs. There is no such thing as the perfect Defender. The closest I got was when I had a 110 tdi station wagon built from a 110 pickup 14 years ago. Still going strong and great fit of panels etc.Hand built by an independent for me. My Puma may not be perfect but it is a very good factory finished vehicle with no major issues and everything fitting as it should. You could have the most perfect car in the world and have it written off by someone else. Up her a cattle trailer came loose from a towing vehicle while parked at the cattle mart. The trailer ran into the car park of a supermarket next door and demolished a new (only a couple of months old) car. Look forward to your Puma as they are truly wonderful machines. Get friendly with the service manager and voice any concerns you have to him. If he does not want to take time to talk to you and reassure you go elsewhere. By the time you have done the simple checks I have mentioned above they will know you are not to be messed with. Life can be uncertain but one thing is certain, namely once you get into that Puma your only complaint will be sore cheek muscles from smiling.Great machines-enjoy. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

my right hand door is so skew i can see the ground through the gap. they did offer to repair it but i decided to keep it just like that, warts and all i say!
it's funny, just yesterday (after 3 years and 75 000km) i was walking towards it and admiring the skew door... i love my defender! www.ralton.co.za |
