Argh - Decisions Decisions
Hi All,

I'm struggling with tyre/wheel choice at the moment for my Puma 90.

I am after a wider stance, a more aggressive look but still have the ability to do some laning.

I think I am set on BFG MT KM2 for tyres but can't decide which width/profile.

Considering

Sawtooth with spacers 265/75r16
Dakars 265/75r16
Dakars 255/85/R16
MaxxTrac Manta 265/75r16
MaxxTrac Manta 255/85r16
MaxxTrac Manta 285/75r16
Modulars (which ones?)

Any help and/or pictures would be appreciated.

My budget is about £1500 so no 18's

All the best

John

I've got a set of 5x 18s and adaptors (brand new adaptors) available (actually got 7 if you've got a Sankey)

Looking for £380, leaves £1120 free for tyres Whistle He who dies with the most toys...wins!

I've run both sizes on my defenders.

IMO... if you're going to be going "off road" proper, then 255/85's have the edge (about an inch taller)

If just general laning and road work, 265/75's look good and handle well.

don't get me wrong, the 255's handle just fine, and if you've got a standard 1.4:1 t/box then gearing is perfect (see you have a puma, which should have a 1.2:1 t/box but lower ratio 1st for better pulling away) but for more spirited road handling the slightly smaller 265 would get my vote... but it's only a marginal thing.

Ok,

Consensus in the thread and the forum seems to say that 255 is the best choice for a bit of everthing. Now how about getting that wider stance? or should I just leave it at the tyres and spend the budget on other goodies (I have been allocated spend from Mrs T and therefore want to use it Twisted Evil )

I also had a set of 285/75's on the project90-3 that I recently built.

They were fitted to standard HD steel (aka Wolf) rims, no spacers.

Were great until the first puddle you go through, then you can't see anything out of the side windows.

I have 235/85s on sawtooths (road use) and 255/85s on modulars (playing). The last ones look more aggressive, but on the road you feel the 235s are more nimble.

I do a lot of miles, but still greenlane at least once a month for one or more days. So I exchange the wheels for that. It's safer and you don't wear out the expensive BFG MTs on the road, so they always have plenty of thread left. Good time to inspect/clean your brakes as well.

The 255s on steel rimms are a lot heavier and are, because of their larger diameter harder to turn around (not a problem in low range, not really in high either but you feel a difference) so I guess switching to 235s for road use also saves the drivetrain in the long run (maybe).

One would also save the expensive sawtooths from scratches doing this, although for me it's too late now.

One lesson I learned however is that when replacing your wheels, put them on exactly like you took them of. Mark them for that. I did not do that with my old wheels and got a tremor I will probably only loose when they are re-tyred, which thankfully is soon (Did +40k miles on my original Wranglers). Will be replaced by a road tyre, probably BFG ATs or again Wranglers which served me well. Or maybe Grabbers or Continental Cross, or... not descided yet.

I think most tyres within the same range (winter or summer) are pretty much the same for my use, so I will look at re-sale values when they are half way through. If you go 255, there aren't much choices...

I will post some pictures when I have the time, so you can see the difference between both when fitted.
