2.2 intercooler hose split - driveline smoothness
Hi All, just FYI...

After going into limp mode (and associated MIL), my 2.2 2012 was diagnosed with a split intercooler hose. This is the hose on the left hand side of the vehicle (when in the driver's seat). This was replaced under warranty.

I have a suspicion that the split had been a gradual process and that the the engine management only went into limp mode when the split eventually became too bad. I think there had been a leak from new.

The reason I bring this up is that since the intercooler hose has been changed the vehicle has become so much smoother to drive. I don't think it is any more peppy (in fact weirdly, in some respects it feels less revvy) but low rev torque is definitely better and gear changes are so smooth it's almost like driving a Japanese hatchback (OK I might be exaggerating a bit). There is very little driveline shunt when going from trailing throttle to power-on. Previously there was a noticeable lag and clunk.

Most noticeable though is the behaviour in low range 1st. Previously I found the engine difficult to manage off road. Even with both feet off the pedals the Defender would slightly surge and bunny-hop while idling along. Now the power is predictable and smooth.

So if any of the problems above ring a bell with you - get your intercooler hose checked. A visual inspection is not good enough - the mechanic only found the split when he put his hand near the hose with the engine revving and felt escaping air.

Hi,
The symptoms you describe are just like mine, juddery at low speeds and a light throttle. I'll check out the intercooler hose to see if this is the problem.
Thanks for the post.
Andy

The intercooler hose is a recall, I just had mine replaced during its first service.

Hose problem is common but I don't recall any previously mentioning drive line smoothness....?

How is that related - anyone?

.....i need to check mine even though mine is a 2.4 Shocked

Just had mine replaced when it went in for a fuel leak - gear changes are so much smoother now - Loved it before - Love it even more now....

Not doubting what you are saying but should we be surprised that gear changes are smoother and if not then why ie what causes the pipe to impact on gear changes?

Defender2495 did you have the engine mil light on or you just did the recall?

Unsure as to why the hose change has had an impact on gear changes - as the turbo is doing almost nothing at those revs? - a great improvement in driveability though. No MIL or recall notification - they just changed it whilst it was there for the fuel leak.

to my mind that's bizarre Confused

would be interesting to understand how things have changed.....I wonder if the difference is the result of a map update which was done at the same time but perhaps not mentioned?

good to hear its going well which is the main thing.

Thumbs Up

Blown Inter cooler hose
Mine had blown couple of months ago and replaced. It was the left hand side hose. Its not cheap either to get couriered to this part of the world from UK. Sad
