If you look at my thread in my defender there some great pics around Keswick...

To get to were the pic above is taken, you just go through the gate at the top and up you go.

Oh man I need to go to the lakes Wink

Any chance of joining a bunch of people doing this route?

Don't think I can go down there on my own and do the route Smile

Any organised tours?

Maybe in end of August or September?

Cheers
Andy

Sometimes going on your own is just fine - You can go at your own pace and if you mess up - no-one to laugh at you. Many of these tracks can be tackled without any real danger to you, your Defender or any ramblers - just a pleasant venture up a track into the hills - other tracks are for those with a large disposable income and a willingness to break their Defender on the rocks.

Drive down from Aberdeen, stay overnight in a B&B/hotel and then have a full day of being amazed at the scenery and what your Defender is capable of. From fording streams to going down a lane with drystane dykes inches away from your mirrors (on both sides) to finding yourself up above cloud level ............. it's great on your own!

On the other hand if you are lonely and seeking a driving, drinking or life partner - maybe group activities have their advantages.

I've found the tips on this forum really great - now I'd like to download that bloke G Mac's brain on the Northumberland lanes - his Youtube vids are very stimulating.

Hi Cuthbert,

Yeah I would agree if it was a route I knew well or even being confident that I am within my rights to be on the given road.

Is there any good green laning maps?

I would hate to go down and go on some areas I was not meant to be on and therefore help closure of the lane...

PS I should state that by being on my own I mean being the only 4x4, I'd very likely have the wife and kids with me. Wink

Cheers
Andy

This is a link to the council website giving basic details of all green lanes in Cumbria.

http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transport/...routes.asp

Cross refer the info here to LRO where he will give you descriptions of lanes, or have a look here

Dave T's response is excellent. The Cumbria Council website is first class in terms of legal issues and zoom in the maps to see the details.

If you are coming down from Aberdeen I'd recommend two tracks in particular if you have the family aboard and just want a nice introduction to going up a hill on a track, seeing some impressive views and not trashing your vehicle. The children are useful for opening and closing farm gates as you drive along. Take a picnic and enjoy a panoramic view of several counties from the highest points.

First off - The Old Coach Road just outside Keswick Ref U2236/U3132 on the Council's map) and then secondly The Breasthigh Road (U3278) which takes you across a ford and thenright over the hilltops between the old A6 and the M6 at Tebay Services. If you have time you can drive them both ways - each is quite a different driving experience on the return leg.
