Haven't posted for a while, but here's my take on it.

Ordered my 1st Land Rover in Nov 09 - a 110 Utility XS in silver.

Rejected it in Feb on PDI for paint issues and panel alignmet which was told later was body alignment !. Re-ordered identical 110 and waited again - next one was as 5hite as the 1st one so rejected that. Had deposit back and walked away.

I'm not really that fussy but for circa £30k you expect a reasonable level of manufacturing standards. I live a stones throw away from the Solihull plant and know several people who work there. Sadly, the Defender is now the butt of everyones jokes who work for LR at the moment and it appears those who bolt them together don't give a 5hite either - its also really sufferred in cost cutting - now zero rust proofing, if ever there was any, but have read some reports there used to be a token jesture ! - the costs for assembling these have now been stripped back to the bare minimum - paint thickness is another. Rusting chassis and bulkhead on new vehicles - just not acceptable, (perhaps they should store them inside at the factory instead of outside in the fooking rain !!.

£30k still in my pocket, but i still want one ................

ps - wonderful story about your daughter Spud, thats what kids are for - happy times and i wish you many more. You are obviously a very proud dad indeed Thumbs Up

People keep saying there is no rust proofing on the new Defenders, but what do they mean? What did older ones have that the new ones don't? Is it a problem if mines Waxoyled?

The older ones had thicker paint, aluminium doors, bonnet and tail, a coating of wax underneath (although this is just for storage and shouldn't be confused with waxoyl or similar).

The best thing to do is to get it waxoyled ASAP. It took me 2 years (saving up) but all done now Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Actually, aluminium panels with a steel frame.

Even if aluminium would not rust like steel, that does not mean that corrosion cannot happen though, it's a different form of corrosion.

However, the steal frame would rust even more due to bi-metal corrosion, I owned a TD5 for a short period of time and the door inner frames were completely gone in dust, and you could not tell by simply looking at the door panel, pretty funny thing (sad actually).

So at least, using steel for the bonnet and doors will avoid the bi-metal corrosion. I would consider this an improvement on the Puma if the steel is correctly protected Smile

well said spudan, great to hear about your daughter and her success, i understand having a autistic child who has made brillant progress also, this is because we were lucky to find a brillant speech therapist and teacher aide and from some one with no language to mainstream school, writing and begining to expand well
rather like the Landrover puma in that anything can be overcome if you find/get the right help ranging from a brillant non offical landrover shop here to forum like this and people on them who are willing to share knowledge, everything is so much easier!!!
I love my puma and still want to drive it across Russia east to west to my wifes family home so I have some faith in it

For the cost cutting I would go for an earlier one ironically - as its only got worse.

That said - they beat the TD5 and earlier hands down, wouldnt look back for all its issues. (maybe i miss the v8 but that was because its a v8!!)

As for paint all our modern cars are the same - paint cover is much worse and i think there is something to be said about the advances in paint which mean they arent as robust.

Mine will likely get another waxoyling this summer - i may even do the innerside of the doors.

Dont forget - you still get 6 years anti-corrosion warranty!! Thumbs Up so check it at 3 before it looses it main warranty - get it serviced and ticked properly then check it at 5.11! Mike

They do have faults - probably more than most - but they're fairly basic and rugged so it doesn't matter too much.

As I like to say, very un-PC'ish - Owning a Defender is like having a kid with Downs Syndrome. You know it's retarded, you can't help loving it Whistle

Just an addition to my earlier post and reponse to Naks. I accept the humorous and indeed valid point made in Nak's post . I responded in perhaps a little heavy handed fashion but the post just hit a little close to home. We all have our off days! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Excellent news! Glad you 'wiped your minge' 'manned up' and took the plunge and bought your Puma. Welcome to the fold....Never a faint heart and warts 'n' all have been mentioned many a time.

Apologies by the way if you've ever had or intend to have a sex change. Laughing Just to keep on the right side of PC.

Hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do! Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Was outside last night and the Puma caught my eye so I went over to it and got in. Was not going anywhere but I just sat, savoured and enjoyed. Don't be surprised if you find yourself doing the same! Welcome to the fold. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That is true, but oxidised aluminium forms a protective layer which stops the corrosion from continuing. Doesn't help with the bi-metal corrosion (they should haver a layer of something between the aluminium and steel), but it does mean aluminium panels are less likely to crumble away than steel.
