People keep saying there is no rust proofing on the new Defenders, but what do they mean? What did older ones have that the new ones don't? Is it a problem if mines Waxoyled?

The older ones had thicker paint, aluminium doors, bonnet and tail, a coating of wax underneath (although this is just for storage and shouldn't be confused with waxoyl or similar). The best thing to do is to get it waxoyled ASAP. It took me 2 years (saving up) but all done now One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Actually, aluminium panels with a steel frame. Even if aluminium would not rust like steel, that does not mean that corrosion cannot happen though, it's a different form of corrosion. However, the steal frame would rust even more due to bi-metal corrosion, I owned a TD5 for a short period of time and the door inner frames were completely gone in dust, and you could not tell by simply looking at the door panel, pretty funny thing (sad actually). So at least, using steel for the bonnet and doors will avoid the bi-metal corrosion. I would consider this an improvement on the Puma if the steel is correctly protected |

well said spudan, great to hear about your daughter and her success, i understand having a autistic child who has made brillant progress also, this is because we were lucky to find a brillant speech therapist and teacher aide and from some one with no language to mainstream school, writing and begining to expand well
rather like the Landrover puma in that anything can be overcome if you find/get the right help ranging from a brillant non offical landrover shop here to forum like this and people on them who are willing to share knowledge, everything is so much easier!!! I love my puma and still want to drive it across Russia east to west to my wifes family home so I have some faith in it |

For the cost cutting I would go for an earlier one ironically - as its only got worse.
That said - they beat the TD5 and earlier hands down, wouldnt look back for all its issues. (maybe i miss the v8 but that was because its a v8!!) As for paint all our modern cars are the same - paint cover is much worse and i think there is something to be said about the advances in paint which mean they arent as robust. Mine will likely get another waxoyling this summer - i may even do the innerside of the doors. Dont forget - you still get 6 years anti-corrosion warranty!! so check it at 3 before it looses it main warranty - get it serviced and ticked properly then check it at 5.11! Mike |

Just an addition to my earlier post and reponse to Naks. I accept the humorous and indeed valid point made in Nak's post . I responded in perhaps a little heavy handed fashion but the post just hit a little close to home. Excellent news! Glad you 'wiped your minge' 'manned up' and took the plunge and bought your Puma. Welcome to the fold....Never a faint heart and warts 'n' all have been mentioned many a time.
Apologies by the way if you've ever had or intend to have a sex change. Just to keep on the right side of PC. Hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Was outside last night and the Puma caught my eye so I went over to it and got in. Was not going anywhere but I just sat, savoured and enjoyed. Don't be surprised if you find yourself doing the same! That is true, but oxidised aluminium forms a protective layer which stops the corrosion from continuing. Doesn't help with the bi-metal corrosion (they should haver a layer of something between the aluminium and steel), but it does mean aluminium panels are less likely to crumble away than steel. |
