Just normal general purpose stuff, doesn't need to be anything special.
On the flange/seal, it's just a finger full rubbed around it so it's not "dry" |

I've just replaced one on my rear diff and filled the back with LM to stop the garter spring falling out while I tapped it in.

Thanks for replies. I've bought some GP grease.
Slightly off topic but hopefully someone will know, I bought BEARMACH PART No: STC4858 replacement diff flange. It comes with a split pin, nyloc nut and a bolt. I'm slightly confused what the bolt is for, I'm expecting to see either a nyloc nut or split pin/castrell nut when I take the prop off. Anyone any idea what the bolt could be for? eBay link for pictures: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290869876466 |

Current diffs use an M12 setscrew (the "bolt") instead of a nut.

To many, no doubt, but strictly speaking not!
The change to a setscrew is useful actually, since if the flange is a tight fit you can screw a length of M12 studding in the hole and then use a nut and washer to pull the flange on, without risk of pushing the pinion into the crownwheel. This wasn't possible with the old arrangement. |
