A a preparation of our 2016 summer overland trip to the north of Chile we decide to take 9 days visiting part of the 1st leg of our main trip in the Atacama Region. Was a 3000 km trip to visit 2 National parks. One in the coast and the other in the Altiplano with road heights u to 4.500 m. (little bit less than the Mont Blanc)
Here is the map of the trip. 3000 km in 9 days We make our basecamp at Bahia Inglesa a nice beach near Copiapo at 1000 km from Santiago and from there we went to both parks Click image to enlarge Located around 20 km north from our basecamp there is a strange rock called orbicular granite that can found in only 11 places in the world. A nice view of the rock with the sea. A must to see if you are there Click image to enlarge Going to the north up to Caldera at 130 km of our base camp there is one of the nicest coastal national park that have several campsites to stay in the beach (we went for the day but probably we use one of the camps in our 2016 trip) Salt roads were well maintaned and was a nice trip to the park Click image to enlarge Then we headed to the interior of the park to get some sun. (during summer this part is like an owen but in winter the temperature were very nice 25°C) Click image to enlarge Finally we stop in a very isolated plot under a very nice sun to lunch Click image to enlarge And the awning finally was used Click image to enlarge The views of the desert were astonishing Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And coming back some of the beachs of the national park Click image to enlarge Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge Last edited by Eduardo on 23rd Jul 2014 7:03am. After some day of visiting the main city Copiapo and the Copiapo river Valley we went to the other side, the mountains that in the area reach the 6000 m.
After take contact with the border police to see the road status and taking in account that the trip were almost 350 km to reach the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, we were in the road at 7:00 am. At 9:00 am we leave the tipicall coastal fog banks and we start our ascent to the mountains through the San Francisco pass road. Click image to enlarge Continue the climb no vegetation appears Click image to enlarge We take a detour to head to Santa Rosa Lake that have a unique landscape Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Finally we reach the pass at 4500 m, a oddisey for my 2 daugthers (10-8 years) that suffered high sickness the rest of us in good condition but the breathing were diffcult and you must move slow. Click image to enlarge But we must to continue (at the background the nevado Tres Cruces) Click image to enlarge And finally Santa Rosa Lake at 3700 m, frezzing at this time of the year Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Then we use a road paralell to the Maricunga Salar to reach again the main road. Our first intention was to reach another lake up to 4200 m but the sickness of my daugthers convince us to come back to a reasonable altitude. Anyway that given us a reason to comeback Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And well, the oad to come back trough the main road Click image to enlarge An returning to Copiapo Click image to enlarge Cheers! Nice work, looks a great little trip. Did you camp out there as well.
How does the car run at those higher altitudes, notice anything. Also it that a dog in one of the pics, yours, or a wild one. |

I consider myself lucky to live where I do. Nevertheless Eduardo I do feel pangs of jealousy now and again seeing your trips and photos. As said before 'stunning' such variations and diversity in one region.
Thanks for sharing! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks guys, really was an amazing trip!
I have a lot of pictures and videos but this ones shows the Defender at work. Regarding the altitude I didn't see too much problem despite the power loss due the thin air at this altitudes (55% of available oxigen compared with the sea level). We were able to sort the slopy road without any big problem (using a lower gear than at the sea level), the consumption was also not affected too much. Timbar, Yep Bahia Inglesa (English bay) was our base (took its name from the english guys that build the first chilean railroad made by William Wheelwrigh that going to this beach in 1850). We come back all the days to there to sleep in a nice cabin at the beach. Nice place to visit out of the season when is full of tourist and a noise place. Is a stornoway with white roof but with the dust, the roof looks like something between gray and light brown. The dog in the picture is a "wild" native fox. Those animals have been feed by the tourist in the past and as soon as they see a car they come to get something (bad thing).
