Hi all
I wanted to refit my RAI but with "restricted breathing" problems in the past (high temperature, high altitude, high speed) and now the bigger intercooler and hybrid turbo sucking even more air, I was a bit worried. There have been a number of air intake mods in the past but with LHD and aircon, I decided to take the bull by the horns and add one... Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The rivnuts around the intake are for the plate I made from a speaker cover which allow me to add a pre-filter (e.g. stocking) or a rubber sheet to block it off entirely. Now I just have to get the RAI back on - looking forward to tomorrow morning Cheers Matt Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Tell someone you love them today because life is short. I hope so
I'll have to see when I have the RAI refitted but I've been driving around this evening and all is well (no more noise etc). I realise any increase in power/torque under normal conditions will be undetectable but I've got an appointment for a dyno test at the end of the month so we can block it off and have a proper look Tell someone you love them today because life is short. I really can't see the point of doing this mod. What's the difference with the original place of the air intake (without RAI)? The (wading) height is the same.
In fact, when wading the original place is situated in the best place to have the most positive effect from the generated bow wave, your new intake more foreward compromises that. Under everyday conditions both intakes are working.
The RAI is somewhat restricting for high temperature/high load driving so the new one "helps out". When in very dusty conditions (it's just an RAI not a snorkel) I can block off the auxiliary intake to keep things clean Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Ok, I get that - so they always are both connected to the airbox at the same time...
Another (more subtle ? ) approach could be to increase the diameter of the RAI? As you know an increase in radius counts as the square for increase in surface. ^ indeed, I do not know exactly the current diameter, but for an example, if you increase the radius from 4 to 5 cm (increase diameter from 8 to 10 cm) the area change is 57% (4x4x3.14=50.2 against 5x5x3.14=78.5). Cheers, Vincent

munch90 - good point but I hope I've addressed the rain risk by having the outlet sticking out almost an inch and there being another inch inside before reaching the grating. Also, using the ribbed hose will slow down any water running along it and the airbox has drain holes (which I don't block off as I don't go wading). To finish the look, I'd like to make a curved "rain cowl" to deflect rain at the top and front, maybe adapted from a drainpipe elbow. Finally, if it gets really hairy I will just plug it (takes 2 seconds). It's just an auxiliary intake for when it's really hot and the engine is struggling (the VNT sucks a lot of air). Even with the standard setup and the RAI on, when it reaches 30 degrees it starts choking at 75 mph (that's slow for here).
VeeTee - the problem with the OEM Mantec RAI is that you can't widen it. Internally, at least on my LHD Puma, there is absolutely no room to fit wider pipework without restricting it in places (which defeats the object). As I don't have as much of a problem without the RAI on, it's only the external part I need to get around - hence the second intake. Incidentally, thanks for the compliments about how it looks. I wasn't sure at first but (unlike many of my projects) I'm happy with it p.s. I run an ITG panel filter which repels water and is much thinner than the original, so sits much higher up away from any water. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Let me say I second LR90XS2011's statement... but I still wonder what the benefit of the RAI is, when the second intake is there? It seems that the new intake has a wider diameter than the RAI and probably less resistance, so I guess most air is sucked in via the new intake. The effect of getting cleaner air at higher distance above the ground surface is then lost.
I think using a really wide diameter pipework to the airbox, and fitting that intake on the original place in stead of the RAI, may be using a cowl like the Wolf Air Intake would be more my way of doing this. But again, good to see you dare to experiment and saw some holes Cheers, Vincent 1959 Polynorm 1/4 Ton Trailer, Olive Drab Green (sold) 1970 M416 Military Trailer (Camping Trailer Conversion), Epsom Green (sold) 1975 Series III 88 V6, Light Green (sadly sold) 1996 Defender 110 CSW 300 Tdi, Epsom Green (sold) 2000 Freelander 1 TD4 3-drs, Silver (sold) 2006 Freelander 1 TD4 5-drs Facelift Automatic, Tonga Green (sold) MySite Last edited by VeeTee on 20th Jul 2014 7:23am. I will do this bit utilising the heater intake on top of the wing.

Points to you for having the balls to cut a hole like that in your front wing... But I tihnk with that mod you completely negated any benefit of a RAI. My basic understanding of fluid dynamics would say that air is also one of these things that follow the path of least resistance, so if that piping that you added is near the diameter of anything else before the turbo, it'll suck in most, if not all of the air through that.
On the 300Tdi atleast, the standard piping for the air intake is idiotic, which is why I did this to mine: Click image to enlarge The effect was profound. I wasn't expecting much, but the difference was significant. Yours is neater though, I only had some scrap bits to go with. |

@Timo, interesting... By chance do you have any pics of your mod with closed bonnet?
And I guess the vehicle is LHD - heaterbox on the left, next to the airfilterbox.
