Freelander2
Well I've got a Freelander2 manual (with the stop/start) as a coutesy car and have to say i think its pretty cool.

The engine has bags of torque and the little light encourages me to change up as low as 1700rpm, revs drop to approx 1200rpm but she still pulls adequately to cruise along. Obviously a down change is required to make more rapid progress. So far I am averaging 35mpg, which is what I could get out of a Mk1 driven in the same manner (but without it shutting down at the lights to save more fuel), so all though its a decent enough figure, I would have epxected slightly better TBH.

The Freelander2 handles very well for a 4x4 and seems to ride really smoothly, though the steering does feel overly assisted and artificially weighted up. Otherwise it is very impressive. It is nice and quiet and would make a good long distance machine. The engine is well muted, though you're alwaysa ware that it is a diesel.

The boot is disappointing. Mk1 Freelanders were deep, but short, these new ones a re shallow and long, so i am not sure its really much of an improvement. Also with the Mk1 you coudl drop the glass and load in over the tailgate to really fill every nook and cranny. One MTB fits in the back with the seats folded - but only just!

Anyway, I think for 4x4 duties I will stick with the Defender and for car duties I am more impressed with the Ford Focus. The Freelander is a great compromise, IF you need to compromise!

Sorry forgot to say its only temporary whilst the Defender is in for a new Transfer-box abnd for the body to be re-aligned

They're a great package. I sometimes even resort to using my wife's F2 for load carrying (the load bay is much more flexible than a Defender's - especially if you've installed the cargo barrier).

Lovely to drive and it seems to handle snow and ice very well. I've not had cause to take it onto lanes yet but I'm sure it would do very well (limited by ground clearance, of course).

Ours is an automatic and I have to say it is a pleasure to drive - it almost drives itself. Our friends keep asking my wife if she's used to driving such a big car yet but she points out that it doesn't feel big at all - just very safe. Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

When we had the td4.e it was getting between 39 - 45 so if yours is new, maybe it needs to bed in.

The F2 are great. If money improves and i can be bothered ill exchange the disco for one: in the mean time ill just use the family one when needed Mike

Have to say I have had approx. nine Freelanders in the past and think they are an amazingly capable veicle. They are what I did a majority of my off-roading in. With a 40-50mm lift and a set of MTs they are pretty good. Being light helpy you skip over stuff too.

In comparison the Fl2 does seem larger/heavier. The turning circle is amazing compared to both the original Freelander and my Defender. But a Defender and Focus suit our needs very well for the time being Wink
