United Kingdom 2002 Defender 90 Td5 HT Caledonian Blue
Stage 3v tuning by IRB
Just thought I'd share my experience of having the stage 3v conversion done to my Td5 90 by IRB Developments.

I have had my defender upgraded from standard, one stage at a time at the IRB headquarters over the last few years. As I have got used to the increased power I end up going back for MORE Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Every time I have had some work done I have been impressed by Ian's huge breadth of knowledge and attention to detail, always doing things properly and with top quality components and procedures. This man will not fit rubbish!

At the weekend I had my defender taken as far as possible, tuning wise, without getting into engine internals and all I can really say is wow Shocked

As I already had most of the components required for stage 3v already fitted to my defender from the stage 2 conversion I had done last year, all that needed to be fitted was IRB's special build turbo and anti limit box. The turbo was fitted in about two hours (would definitely have been quicker without all of my questions and interruptions Embarassed )

The other component that Ian fitted was a dual channel limit box that stops the ECU seeing over boost and tripping out the MAF sensor (again, this no doubt, would have taken less time if it wasn't for my never ending questions!)

Now it was time to have the ECU re-calibrated for the new turbo, this didn't take very long at all (even with more questions!)

Out for a test drive, before we had even got onto the main road from the IRB HQ I could feel the difference. Throttle response was much keener and there was more torque available from much lower in the rev range.

We went out onto the main road and even just steadily accelerating up to the speed limit I could feel a HUGE difference. Ian needed to adjust the anti limit box to my setup, so whilst reading the live data, he adjusted the box to ensure I have the perfect setup for my vehicle.

This involved holding wide open throttle at high revs in 4th to get maximum sensor readings (yes...more questions!) I was staggered at the smooth power delivery right up to the red line, although I never drive it like that it was nice to know it had it!

After the anti limit box was properly adjusted Ian asked me to drive around, giving me different instruction to simulate different conditions, such as low revs in second out of a junction through to roll on power delivery in top gear. We went through this procedure a few times, to check that I was happy with the engine calibration and driveability, which I was!

Now I have done a few hundred miles with the current setup and all I can say is it is a complete transformation. Pickup from low revs is great, and as the turbo opens up the mid range is very strong. As the new turbo is bigger the top end is also vastly improved and it doesn't feel strangled as it did before.

Overall driveability is great with very, very minimal smoke. In fact I would say that the overall package is so good that for anyone who didn't know anything about defenders wouldn't know it wasn't factory from the was the engine bay looks to the way it drives.

There are no flat spots or power surges, just a strong build of power all the way through. I cannot recommend this conversion enough. To anyone considering it, You will not regret it. For anyone who hasn't considered it you need to. It could be the best thing you do to your defender!
