Hi folks,
Been having a right good sniff around my new defender (new to me). In the engine bay I see the following component and I'm struggling to identify it......any ideas? Also it seems like it has the wires disconnected and tywrapped out the way and wrapped in leccy tape. Any ideas? Click image to enlarge Cheers Andy |

Ahhh,
No it was removed and blanked off by the previous owner (JE Engineering I believe did the work). Thanks for the help. Cheers Andy |

Hi little tom, why have you got two??
If it's for controlling the EGR then two doesn't make sense, unless my car is meant to have two, or the location of the second one has been moved..... Cheers Andy |

My 2005 TD5 had two valves, just the same as Toms

Hi,
A mate of mine was telling me how he hydrauliced an engine during wading despite having a wading kit fitted. He said that there is a float type valve in the air intake circuit after the wing panel intake point, this closes when the water rises up. His memory is patchy, except the fact that he had to fork out for a new td5 engine......... Anyway, my truck came with what looks like a mantec snorkel already fitted, and I'm trying to establish if I need to do anything on the circuit to allow me to run in water (I know about the axle and gearbox breathers). I'm not planning on taking the car into deep pools of water, but figured if somebody went to the bother of putting a snorkel on then it's worth ensuring it can do what it's meant to be able to do. Is this the offending valve? It's inbetweeners the wing intake point and the air filter. Click image to enlarge Cheers Andy |

Click image to enlarge Part 9, which I think is what you are referring to, is a rubber 'dump' valve. If you intend on heavy wading, seal it up, but clean it out first. They aren't a great piece of kit anyway. Some vehicles have them on the bottom of the air box too, I'm not sure if there is one on the TD5... Eu3 Td5 engines (post 2002 I think) have an EGR throttle added which is controlled by the second EVRV you see next to the first EVRV which controls EGR valve position. |

Thanks folks, that explains things.
With regard to the rubber boot on the intake, is it worth replacing that section of pipe? I have no intention on serious wading, I do think that it should be removed or plugged, especially if it's a weak point if I do go into water!! Cheers Andy |

You could replace it, or go with a squirt of silicone.

Hi,
I guess it's upstream of the air filter, so if it a bit comes loose it'll get stopped by the filter. I could remove part 9 and fill with silicone I guess. Saves a bit of cash Cheers Andy |
