Manmouth - Pumatech chequer plate bonnet protection.
Big parcel arrived today, no instructions, guess I just throw it on and drill and screw.

Looking forward to mount it, so looking for anyone´s experience.

I have some different length screws in the bag and wondered where they go ?

I got FOUR gaskets with mine? Top tip....go to a decent acquatic centre, buy a couple of metres of butyl pondliner and make your own gaskets. Thumbs Up

Will dig out the photo of the gaskets and repost it for you. Thumbs Up

**EDIT**

Here they are.... Thumbs Up

Very welcome. Thumbs Up

Not sure of the proportion of long and short bolts you've been supplied with but I could have done with more long less short. They did say they were going to address this when I gave them feedback.

TOP TIP.....dependant on how the chequerplate lies some of the short bolts do not quite fit through the chequerplate and the bonnet. By using one of the long bolts it is possible to draw the chequerplate to the bonnet. Extract the long bolt ant the short one now fits! I used Sikaflex to wet assemble all the bolts to prevent ingress of moisture and air to prevent corrosion.

TBH, the gasket doesn't do much other than to aid positioning when marking up the holes and stop vibration/resonance when driving. Some would say it stops scratching the bonnet, but then why would you be bothered about that when you are drilling a dozen or so holes in the bonnet!!

Buy yourself a couple of tubes of really good engine gasket sealant(I have black on mine) and don't be afraid to overload the back of the plate. Try and spread a 2-3mm thickness all over. 3-5mm would be ideal as when you start to bolt it to the bonnet and tighten it up it will fill all the voids and push the excess out the edges. This way you create a 'sandwich' which when set will give the bonnet enough extra strength to walk and even jump on.

You have to remember that the chequer plate whilst looking similar does not fully match the contours/shape of the bonnet so will always have week spots unless you create this 'sandwich'.

Obviously, you do not need to go to this extent if you are not putting any weight on it Whistle

CnW,

Is this underway yet? Drilling 28 holes in an unblemished bonnet is not for the faint-hearted? If you need any more pictures just holler!

I have not had time, been getting the trailer ready for the norwegian national event.

So the pumatech is put on hold for at least 3 weeks, then I hope my helper is back.

I will be masking up like in the pictures, measuring 4 - 5 times get the pilot holes drilled, and then either use the suggested gasket material or RTV silicon or similar.

might just be starting with cleco´s.

The bonnet is steel if memory serves me correct, then I need to get som primer and touch up paint as well.
