What bulbs can i use?
Hi,

I was wanting to know if someone could tell me what bulb i would need to replace the OE LR Work light at the rear as wanting a little more light and was thinking of going the LED route?

Also wanting to replace the rear and front indicator bulbs to LED, would this cause any problems?

Cheers

Stu

A work light is not an obligatory light so basically you can replace your existing filament bulb with whatever you like.

Indicators are obligatory lights and so have to be type approved, which these days for modern vehicles means E mark.

If your indicators are type approved/E marked and have filament bulbs fitted then you can legally only fit a replacement filament bulb in them.

Fitting a LED cluster into a type approved filament bulb indicator is illegal.

Just replacing the filament bulb with an LED will most likely give an illegal flash rate. It will also affect the trailer warning circuit.

Yes you can get a replacement relay which will cure the flash rate problem but may well not cure the trailer light function issue. There are modules available to maintain the correct trailer function.

It is not illegal to sell various non type approved LED's but it might be illegal to use them on the public highways.

There are some companies who openly say that their LED headlights are NOT E marked but will pass a UK MOT. The UK MOT is currently only looking at beam aim etc and not legality of the actual headlights. Passing the MOT it may or may not do, however they will still be ILLEGAL for use on the public highway!

One of the reasons why I took out the LED number plate bulbs and died repeater bulbs to go back to standard for now.
For LED indicators you want either RDX (which I have) or Wipac's version.
You'll need their relay too, they are E marked from the factory thus legal unlike bulbs.
Only downside IMO is that LED number plate light are rubbish on the market and nothing great for side repeaters either.
If only a company would sort those two out it'd be excellent. ( with SMD LED's though not the rubbish normal ones)
Could be something in the RDX BoB pipeline regarding side repeaters in LED but not guaranteed.

R.e the work light, take the bulb out and see what type it is,be aware that putting a higher wattage bulb in may melt the lens/reflector,especially a static work light. Most incandescent bulbs can be found in LED form these days so led is probably your best bet. Also replacing the standard light with a led work light can be done fer £20 or so.

I'm just not a fan, light output on regular LED's is to directional and easily fail.
I much prefer SMD chip type like in the RDX & Wipac lights, had an LED number plate light and that had regular LED's in and failed same day! Shocked
Not only that my rear bumperettes was more lit than the number plate and had that silly blue tint to the light like boy racers often have and not white light.
The side repeaters there is nothing actually on the market any good yet except universal fit side repeaters.

Is the poor quality that does it, pot luck though some are very good.
My footwell strips which are the chip type LED's (red light in mine ) were only about £2 each on E-bar believe it ri mot and they have been absolutely excellent.
So much so I fitted some more too.
SMD type in my interior light too, again really good.
Red is a dark colour but I like that. Twisted Evil
Only refusal LED's I have is in the door handles an that's only 2x in each side and quality by Prism.
They are directional but in that instance that is what I wanted. Mr. Green
