Thanks for the replies I did have the vacuum pump replaced a few years back with the revised pump - do they tend to go every few years??

yes it seems like the rubber that is moulded to the metal gasket go hard over time allowing them to leak
maybe worth giving the area a good clean with brake cleaner ( let it dry before starting )then give it a short run and check for oil leaking there was some gaskets that were a black coated steel sheet , can't remember which is the newer type think its the rubber seal style Last edited by munch90 on 7th Jul 2014 9:40pm. One last silly question! My misses told me she had the air con blasting on it today (we haven't used the air con in months) this couldn't have triggered the leak / made it worse could it? I guess I am clutching at straws........

only possible way but it would be a long shot !
if the pump is leaking on the drive spindle seal , with aircon on , belt may have been putting more load on the pulley on vac pump ? maybe !!!! other possible things to leak on nearside ( rhd ) , oil cooler to filter housing ( rubber seal between ) , oil filter housing ( plastic cup ) , oil filter housing to block ( gasket ) , oil light switch . |

Do you have any oil spray on the bonnet? If so vacuum pump as described. When you state the leak is 'all over' can one presume it's a high pressure leak that's spraying or a large low pressure leak? A little more detail or photos would help perhaps nail it down? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Mal,
think they may be referring to a different pump. didn't notice any mention of oil on bonnet and it's the N/S not the drivers side so guess that rules out the brake servo which I think you're referring to ?  |

Yeah you're right.
Still be nice to know exactly where the oil is being emitted from. When my vacuum pump failed it was quite catastrophic with oil all over the engine bay. Shouldn't be too hard in this case with the amount of loss to determine exactly where. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! servo vacuum pump is on n/s of engine ( rhd ) the oil leak on the pump doesn't always blow oil everywhere it can just weep to begin with |

I have got my local garage looking at it and it doesn't seem to be vac pump as that looks clean. I would say that doesn't look like high pressure spray more one that is getting onto the various belfs and pulleys and getting chucked around. When viewed from below its all over the front axle and n/s chassis rail. When this last happened it was coming from a plastic blanking plate on the front of the engine (I would call it on the front timing chain / belt cover but my description may be wrong!) and it is looking like it may well be coming from here again???
The truck is at the garage at present so can't do photos but will update if / when this problem is resolved. As always any thoughts great fully received. Cheers Ed. |
