Looking at the grill, windscreen hinges and the mirror stems that's a Series 3 of around 1973 vintage

That second (Landrover - not VW) photo is interesting, the stay wasn't visible in the first but the scheme makes perfect sense. Over the years I've owned several vehicles with windscreens which open in this way. I wonder if any examples have survived - it would be a very rare option to find now.
The principle would be great on a TDCi now that the opening dash vents have been deleted. I wonder if an enterprising aftermarket manufacturer could develop something at a reasonable price (which didn't leak, of course). |

Easy enough to do on a Series. I've restored and had quite a few old vehicles with opening screens and like them, in fact up until they came with heaters an opening screen was pretty standard. Steve.

I think I am right in saying that you don't need washer jets either (come MOT time) if you have front opening windows. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

I used to find they were a bit of a mixed thing with front screen openings on tractors. If there's a breeze then they could help but generally when working the tractor hard you would have engine heat, dust and noise straight at you. Not allways the most pleasant of experiences.

If you have one or more wipers then you MUST have working washers. You do not however require wipers nor washers if you can "obtain an adequate view to the front without looking through the windscreen".
In practice this means that if you present (for example) a series 1 Land-Rover for MoT testing with no tilt or hoodsticks fitted (so the windscreen can be dropped simply by unclipping it) it will pass with no wipers and washers present, and indeed I have done this (it had no doors either at the time). If the hoodsticks are fitted then the fact that you need tools to drop the windscreen means that most examiners will consider that it doesn't qualify for a pass. If you had a top-hinged 'screen like the one in this thread you wouldn't need wipers nor washers. However if you have either wipers or washers you must have both (you can't have the one without the other) and they must all work. |
