Had a great tour of the Defender production line. Its in the same building as the FFRR line. Its like stone age meets Buck Rogers in the 24th century. For instance. The FFRR guys have a wheel carrier and auto wheel nut winder. Only 30m away is the poor Defender wheel fitter, he has to get the wheels from a cage roll it to the vehicle then lift it on to the hub then fumble with the nuts.

A few new introductions and info i managed to glean.

There is a new one piece jig that locates the scuttle (or fire wall or bulk head) this one piece jig replaces a multi jig, The one piece jig was introduced a few weeks ago and will Whistle improve body panel fitment. Basically it ensures the scuttle is positioned at a perfect 90deg to the chassis.

Defender production is going up to match demand Shocked

Within minutes of leaving the production line every Defender is stuck on a rolling road and run up to 90mph with the centre diff locked to test the gears and then the brakes.

The hand brake is tested on the rolling road with the vehicle in neutral and the wheels turning. I didn't manage to spot the speed at which this was done. But it didn't sound nice Big Cry

The savings from using the cheaper Puma engine allowed LR to improve other areas of the Defender ie the dash.

I got the impression that LR are aware that the electronics are not the best and they may be working on improving these areas.

Glad you had a good time.

I did think this was common knowledge that they run them up to speed immediately after production (i thought it was actually in the manual) hence running them in is a little pointless.

Its 30mph they test the handbrake istr

They do a few other tests later on at the final check Damson wood gate vehicle loading area.

They have been behind of Defender production for a while, but overall production is down at the minute as the RR etc arent being bought. Mike
