If it is, it's not sounded like that for the last 18 months
![]() The gasket between the inlet manifold and where the EGR pipework comes up needs replacing, which has a slight hissing sound. If this has worsened could that be the cause? |

Water pump, vacuum pump, fuel pump, power steering pump, and EGR valve are all on the left of the engine and could whine, but it is notoriously difficult to 'place' sounds accurately from the driver's seat. Alternatively it could be the anciliary drive belt or one of its many many pulleys or bearings.
It could also be from a loose exhaust manifold or leak from the joint between the manifold and turbo. Such leaks can make a wierd assortment of unexpected sounds, as can a leak from the turbo-to-intercooler or intercooler-to-manifold hoses. There are many things that can whine on a Puma Defender! |

Cheers blackwolf - I've just run it out now that it has cooled and the whine is not there - it's definitely occuring only while the engine is hot. Does this suggest air temp related issues that may point towards a vacuum leak?

It would point me more towards an exhaust manifold leak. Check that the front-most nuts securing the manifold to the block (really inaccessible unfortunately) are tight - mine work loose and need tightening about once a year.
